I did and those are your only options, outside of a hack (if there is one) which can't be discussed here.
It's a small device that has it's limitations. If you need to do a lot of typing, use another device or get a BT keyboard.
No, what you are asking is not possible unless you wish to do things that void your warranty. Submit your feedback to Apple about changes you'd like to see in the keyboard:

Tape doesn't void your warranty but it won't work. Meg was referring to a hack voiding the warranty.

Thanks, but those are not real keyboards, e.g. For entry fields, web forms, address book, or 100 other direct entry points in iPhone normal daily use and are in no way any kind of solution. Does Apple not allow keyboard plug-ins for its very limited standard offering?
There are no "plug-ins" for any software features on any iOS device. Apple allows limited user changes to the software in the name of simplicity, reliability and security. That's one of the trade-off in using an iOS device. if you want a more 'open' device, try an Android.
An. Do apple do all their own keyboard layouts? That's all that is really required here: a DELETE key that is half width, right justified to edge of screen

Your response to Paul's first post seemed to indicate to me that you didn't want any workarounds. However, if you're interested in speech to text, take a look at Dragon Dictation. As you have to do everything within the program, though, it may not appeal to you.
And, like Paul, never heard anyone complain about the backspace key or had any problem with it myself. Now, the space key..... that's a different issue.

Or, he simply meant exactly what he said: that he'd never heard anyone comment about it before.
Why are people so defensive? It was not an insult. Get over yourself.
My point was to to indicate that very few people consider this a problem, therefore Apple is unlikely to do anything about it, but feel free to leave feedback... it can't hurt.
