How do I get the underscore to appear on the keyboard?

I have need for the underscore symbol, and I have trouble getting it. It seems to be intermittent!

Tap .?123 button to bring up the numeric/symbols and then tap the #+= and it should be at the left-hand end of the second row down.

Thanks for the reply. I spent 30 minutes with a. Apple rep and could not fix it. It is still intermittent!

The layout depends partly on where you are typing e.g. in the 'To' field in Mail it's next to the spacebar, and when typing a URL in Safari it's on the bottom row of the keyboard
