New Aluminum Keyboard up arrow key sends F6 also

I replaced a 1 year old aluminum keyboard with a new one, with the mission control icon, instead of dashboard, over a belkin flip kvm (F1DG102U) and the up arrow key is sending F6. The older keyboard (which, somehow, got smashed by a table) doesn't display this behavior, and still works fine, despite numerous broken keys (they all work fine, but, some are hanging off).

I've got it replaced once already, plugged on a mac mini and it worked fine. After I plugged it to the kvm, up arrow sends up+F6. No matter what I do, even without the kvm, up arrow sends up+F6.

Nothing has changed in the OS, prior to changing keyboards. There's nothing plugged anywhere, except for the monitor (hdmi), itself and a magic trackpad. I've tested on a pc (with windows and gentoo linux), and both report up + F6 when I press the up arrow. Over windows and linux, the numeric pad works fine (both as arrow and 8, numlock on/off).

What could have caused this? and, is there a fix??

thanks in advance.

Thanks a lot for this. I'd like to explain the process.

1) Install a Shareware utility "Karabiner".

2) Profiles > Create new profile > Give it a name

3) Misc & Uninstall > Custom Settings: Open Custom Settings (A finder window will open).

4) Open the private.xml in a text editor (e.g. Sublime Text)

5) paste the above mentioned item between <root> </root>

<item>

<name>Disable F6</name>

<identifier>private.disable_f6</identifier>

<autogen>__KeyToKey__ KeyCode::F6, KeyCode::VK_NONE</autogen>

<autogen>__KeyToKey__ KeyCode::F16, KeyCode::F6</autogen>

</item>

6) Save and close the private.xml

7) Change Key > Reload XML

8) Disable F6 should appear in the Karabiner window. Check it.

9) Consider donation to Karabiner through Paypal. It is just $10

10) Write a thank you note here

You are done! 🙂

I realize it's been several months, but did you discover any solution to this problem? My keyboard (aluminum extended keyboard) has been doing the same thing with the same keys (up arrow + F6). I replaced it with a brand new keyboard of the same type, and it immediately started sending Up + F6 as well. Both keyboards now seem to send Up + F6 on any machine they are plugged in to. I'm baffled.

I'm on an iMac running 10.6.8 Snow Leopard.

I noticed that unplugging the keyboard for a while (15-20 minutes) would temporarily solve the problem. After plugging the computer back in, the Up arrow worked perfectly for a few minutes. Then it occasionally started sending F6 with the Up arrow, but not on every keystroke. It kept sending F6 more and more often, until, after about five minutes, it was sending it every time I press Up arrow.

When I replaced the keyboard with a brand new one (same type, the aluminum extended keyboard), the new keyboard was also sending Up+F6 together, even after rebooting the computer. However, our office was closed the next day and my computer was off during that time. After I came back yesterday, the new keyboard worked correctly for the entire day. I'll continue to keep an eye on it today. If it seems to continue working, I'll try going back to the old keyboard to see if the problem comes back.

I'll toss in on this one too. This behavior JUST started on my Power Mac Wired Alluminm Extended Keyboard. For NO apparent reason. Up arrow also triggers F6.

I ALMOST trashed my InDesign preferences before I realized that it was happening universally. And shows up in Keyboard Viewer. Behavior persists after restart.

This seems to be an actual glitch down in the code someplace.

Anyone get lucky and find an answer or fix?

I had one keyboard with exactly the same problem, sending up arrow + f6.

I got it fixed applying "electrical contact cleaner" spray through each key.

Using the mini tube that works as extension to the spray, I sprayed it through/under each key, and then I left the keyboard drying out on sun light.

PS: if you decide to try it out, take care to read first the safety instructions/advises of the product, as they are chemicals.

Same problem. I use Spark, a 3rd party program that allows me to create keyboard shortcuts for launching apps, or opening files or folders. When I turn off the Spark daemon, the up key gives an error sound. Sometimes it works for stepping up one item in a list, but more often it jumps *down*. Goes away after unplugging & shutting down for a while, but comes back.

It's been over a year since I had any problems with the keyboard, but we just moved offices last week and after plugging everything back in, this problem started up again. Like last time, it was occasional at first and gradually happened more and more often until it was happening with every up keystroke.

Based on my experience last time, I turned off the computer, unplugged the keyboard and mouse (plugged into the keyboard's side USB port), jiggled the cords, and left everything off and unplugged over the weekend. I plugged everything back in when I returned on Monday, and I've had no problems since.

So, I'm not sure if it's a physical problem or a weird electrical quirk, but leaving the computer off AND the keyboard unplugged has worked twice for me now.

I had this problem for years. It would come and go randomly. Replacing the keyboard or restarting did not help. It was a huge problem in coding IDEs like Eclipse and IntelliJ. I just tried something that appeared to work.

I've gone into System Preferences and replaced the Input Sources keyboard (US) with the US International - PC keyboard.

Don't know yet if this will turn out to be a permanent solution, but for now I'm free of that dastardly problem.
