Problem with Windows Installer Package

Hello everyone,

I've been trying to update my iTunes to the most recent version (10.5.1.42), but unfortunately I keep encountering an error message during the install process. The message reads: "There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support perssonel or package vendor." I did some research on this error, and other users that encountered the error (about 2 years ago for iTunes 8.1) suggested removing Quicktime from your computer and then continuing the install. This was to no avail 😟. My computer runs windows 7, and has never had any problems with iTunes until now.

I hope someone can help me with this issue!

Thank you,

Matt

Go to Microsoft website to fix install and Unistall problems. Click "Run now" from Fix it to remove all iTunes & related installer files:

http://support.microsoft.com/mats/Program_Install_and_Uninstall

Be aware that Windows Installer CleanUp Utility will not remove the actual program from your computer. However, it will remove the installation files so that you can start the installation, upgrade, or uninstall over.

This did not help the issue at all. It said that everything looks fine and I should have no trouble installing the program. Now, I uninstalled iTunes as another possible solution, and uninstalled Quicktime, and iTunes still won't install again. So not only do I not have the most recent version of iTunes, I'm left with no version at all. 😟

You should remove all instances of iTunes and the rest of the components listed below:

it may be necessary to remove all traces of iTunes, QuickTime, and related software components from your computer before reinstalling iTunes.

Use the Control Panel to uninstall iTunes and related software components in the following order:

iTunes

QuickTime

Apple Software Update

Apple Mobile Device Support

Bonjour

Apple Application Support (iTunes 9 or later)

Follow the instructions from Apple article listed here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923 to remove all components

Reboot your computer. Next, download iTunes from here:

and install from scratch

I tried a variety of different solutions to get my iTunes to update. I would always get the "...windows installer package.." error when trying to update iTunes. Here is a list of things I tried:

- I got an error on the Bonjour removal but just clicked 'ignore' when the window popped up and it got removed.

- I was able to remove all of the apple programs from the un-install excpet for the Apple Software Update as it gave me the same error "...windows installer package.."

- Rebooting afterwards did not work for me as the same error kept on appearing.

- What did work was in the Add or Remove Programs. Instead of trying to remove the program 'Apple Software Update', click on 'Change' and then select 'Repair'. After this I was able to download iTunes. It appears that some .dll files were missing which may have been the main cause of the problem.

I went to "Apple Software Update", ran it, it found Mobile me, Safari, Bonjour and Itunes, clicked all and hit install and I was FINALLY able to get Itunes installed with no problem. I had talked to Apple support, they sent an email with inst. on how to uninstall and in what order, my old Apple software. I did all this, many times and then went to install itunes and got the lovely msg...".There is a problem with the Windows install package..etc". I read a post her that said to run the Apple update and it worked. I have window xp pro media edition on my desktop and needed to update itunes so I would not have a problem with updating my Ipad. this simple solution worked great, I wanted to thank the person that posted it, can't find who yet but I will. All this uninstalling was UNNESSESSARY!!!!!!!!!

To find Apple Software Update on my computer, I did a search! Holy Cow, this has taken all day to get itunes. Hope it works for everyone thats having this problem. Good Luck all.
