Does iPhone 4S (AT&T) fit in iPhone 4 case (AT&T)?

I just got a iPhone 4S (AT&T), and I wanted to use the bumper I'm currently using for my old iPhone 4 (AT&T).

However, it doesn't fit exactly. The hole for the mute switch doesn't match with the iPhone 4S'.

I read somewhere on the Internet saying Verizon iPhone 4 is slightly different from AT&T iPhone 4 because of internal components locations.

But I thought all AT&T iPhone 4 is the same until now... Did Apple move the mute switch of the AT&T iPhone 4 a bit later???

I got my iPhone with the bumper when Apple released it last year, so it's really from ititial production, I guess.

Anyway my question is that I want to know if AT&T iPhone 4 and AT&T iPhone 4S are exact the same or not, specifically location of the mute switch and volume buttons.

I want to buy a new case for the iPhone 4S, but some say just for iPhone 4 and don't mention 4S, so...

iPhone 4S, iOS 5

The mute switch and volume buttons on the ATT iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S are not in the position. So old ATT iPhone 4 cases will not fit the iPhone 4S properly. The button and switch positions of the Verizon 4 and the ATT and other 4Ss are the same. Case manufactures modified their cases once the Verizon 4 came out so their cases could be used on both the ATT and Verizon iPhone.

I personally had an AT&T iPhone 4 and then upgraded recently to the iPhone4S with AT&T. I did not notice anything with the placement of the buttons. I did however notice that the camera would not take pictures correctly with my iPhone 4 case on the 4s. It took the picture but the picture would not turn out....it was almost like the lighting etc was being blocked somehow even though the camera lens appears to fit exactly through the iPhone 4 case hole ok. Once I took the case off and retook the picture the picture turned out perfectly. I wish the iPhone 4 cases would be compatible as I've not found another Speck Fabric case designed with the bigger camera hole for my iPhone4S.

jmstlrojas,

If you had a case that was made for the AT&T and Verizon iPhone 4 then you probably wouldn't notice a difference. Since the the buttons and switch for the Verizon version were moved slightly as opposed to the AT&T model, case manufactures began making cases that would fit both. Since I had a case that was designed strictly for the AT&T iPhone 4 and the iPhone 4S has the same button and switch locations as the Verizon model, I had to modify my old case to work with the 4S. I was also lucky that the old case has a relatively large hole for the camera.

The case I was using was one of the Fabric Cases from Speck Products. I did not buy it specifically for my 'AT&T' iPhone vs a Verizon iPhone. It is very frustrating that companies are marketing these cases and stating that they are compatible for the iphone 4s when they truly are not. The only ones that are compatible are the ones with the larger opening in the back. I'm really happy with Speck's cases...especially the fabric ones....I'm just bummed that I can't get it in the same design that I was using before.

The answer depends on the case. If the case is an old style case that was made before the Verizon iPhone 4. The location of the volume buttons and mute switch was changed slightly on the Verizon iPhone. The iPhone 4S button layout is the same as the Verizon iPhone 4. So if you buy a case that is for a Verizon 4 or a newer case that was designed to fit both the AT&T and Verizon iPhone 4, then it will fit your iPhone 4S.
