I found a way to edit a command line that was supposedly going to manipulate the program to make my modified photos save as the originals.
Do you mean you modified the application (program) or the library? If it's the application reinstall the app from the App Store. If you just modified the library then you'll have to do what Larry recommends.
You could try rebuilding the library as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.>Click on the Add Library button,
2 - select the library you want to add from those in the selection window.
3 - make sure that in the rebuild window the checkbox "Scavange orphaned photos" is checked.
4 - now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
5 - in the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed. Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2: Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.
If the rebuild library isn't any better than the current library you can trash it.
I think it's time you take this approach:
Starting over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
1. Open the library package like this.
2. Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
3. Drag the subfolders of the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the open iPhoto Library package into the open iPhoto window a few at a time.
This will create a new library with the same Events (but not necessarily the same Event names) as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.
Note: your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.
Here's how, but s most issues people report with iPhoto involve the Library, reinstalling is not always the solution.
To re-install iPhoto
1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2a: On 10.5: Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows: In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
/var/db/receipts/
2c: on 10.7 they're at
/private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
If you purchased it on the App Store or have a Recent Mac you can find it in your Purchases List.
Hi -
I've been searching this forum and others all morning since migrating my old macbook (running Snow Leopard) to my new MBPro running Lion. I had the issue with iPhoto wanting to upgrade, then crashing repeatedly. I followed the instructions above and deleted all of the iphoto.pkg files. My problem is how to re-install iPhoto. So I went into AppStore and looked in the Purchases list. When I clicked on Accept it tells me "These apps have already been accepted and are in my purchases list. I thought I could just download it again so I clicked the "X" in the Purchases list next to iPhoto. Now it won't let me download it at all (instead of "installed" it now says "Accept" by iPhoto, and when I click on that it repeats the process I described above asking me to sign in to AppleID, then telling me it's already accepted and in my purchases list (only now it's NOT there).
Since I have a new mac with no Restore disks, do I have to System Restore Lion (is that when you hold Command-R when rebooting?) If yes, can someone walk me through what steps to follow from there - I've never restored without a CD before.
Thanks,
-D.

Contact App Store support for help with that. There's a link on the right hand side of the App Store window.

My comment was that I can drag the shortcut from the dashboard into the trash. But, I cannot drag the app from within the Applications folder to the trash. That is the only way I know how to uninstall anything if there is not uninstall.....
The question marks meant..... what do I do now?
I am running 9.5.1
I too believe that I need to uninstall and reinstall iPhoto. (Please inform me if this should be on another thread.)
I've been reading up on these forums and am still a little nervous to do something I can't reverse. I'm running iPhoto 9.6 on OXS Yosemite 10.10.2 I have all my photos organized with iPhoto (date, location, faces, etc...) I like iPhoto for organization, but the duplicate files when a photo is edited is annoying to me and takes up my computer space. Now I do my editing prior to adding the photos to iPhoto, but that wasn't always the case.
I found a way to edit a command line that was supposedly going to manipulate the program to make my modified photos save as the originals. Seemed to work, but now many of my photos show in the mini preview correctly, but when I open them, they are flipped 90 degrees or 180 degrees. When I use them as a screen saver with my apple TV... same issue. They look fine in iPhoto, but they are rotated when they display on my TV. *sigh* Serves me right for messing with command lines.
Is my best bet to uninstall and reinstall? My original CDs are from 2007 when I bought my macbook pro. Does that make a difference if I uninstall now? I have read up on enough of these feeds to already have my photos exported to my external.
Stop using iPhoto
It will not work unless you leave the library alone (and it never has any duplicates in the library unless you import duplicates - it does have three different versions of each photo)
Since you apparently have been making direct changes to the content of the iPhoto library you either must go back to before you started doing that, start over with a new library and never make changes to it or use a different application
LN
It was a manipulation to the program. Not the library. All the photos themselves are fine. If I open them in preview, they look normal and they have been exported correctly. I screwed something up with the way iPhoto functions.
Basically if I rotate or modify any photo in iPhoto the command modification causes the photo to rotate or be cropped when viewed. The file is fine. I can still reveal the photo in finder and no crazy rotating or cropping happens.
I'm assuming that if I simply junk iPhoto and reinstall it with the original (proper) magic coding formula that I never should have touched in the first place, I can just import all my photos again.
My main concerns are:
* Clearing all parts of the iPhoto app to be able to start fresh
* Being able to reinstall it without screwing myself and having to buy the program again. (it came with my computer back in 2007 so I have the CD, but i'm not sure if that is too early of an iPhoto version to work with the Yosemite and if I'll then be able to do the updates to it to bring it to the current version)
* Losing all my dates and locations (I can deal with having to find all the faces again, but I'll never remember all the places and dates for my hundreds of photos)
I screwed something up with the way iPhoto functions.
Sure did

Probably - but you still h damaged library and importing photos into it is risky - you really need to start over from scratch with a clean install of the application nd a new library importing your photos again
As to buying it - depends - if you previously had any version of iPhoto '11 then you can download iphoto 9.6 (required for Yosemite) for free in the App store - if you do not have iphoto '11 then you must purchase iPhoto 9.6
as to what you have lost - no way to even guess - you did stupid things to your photos in your library and there is no way to tell how much you messed up - in an iphoto library that had not been adulterated the masters (or Originals in older versions) contains the original exactly as imported and that is where you start over - in your mess I have no idea what yu have or where you should go to start over
I do strongly suggest tha you never mess with things you do not understand if you care about your photos at all

@LarryHN are you trying to help or just trying to upset people? I have actually worked with coding before and it was here on these forums that I originally found the code edit, so I had hoped that the advice given on these Apple forums from highly rated people was tried and true. I already realize that what I did effected something adversely, but making me feel like more of an idiot doesn't do much for your credibility at being a helpful contributor. I realize that I'm either 1.) out-of-luck or 2.) able to do something about my issue. So I thought I'd check on here before I have to do something drastic. Please don't wrongly assume that I'm computer illiterate. I didn't think that Apple was a supportive company to cyber bulling.
@Old Toad thank you for your help. I will try these methods. My last resort will be to simply make a spreadsheet of photo file names and their respective dates and locations and take the next (however many) weeks to enter them back in by hand.
Trying to help - telling you what you need to do and what no to do again
Good luck
You created a massive mess and there may well be no recovery - but if you do not want help ut prefer to attack people who are thin got help then you will need lots of luck
As to finding a bad hack here - I actually doubt it since there are many experience people here who would either have that removed or post a warning about it - but in any case this is a volunteer forum and anyone can post anything here so finding it here does not guarantee anything - it you only deal with people with strong experience as shown by their solution points you will be safe

I agree and that is wha ti told her - but this concerns me and causes me tho suspect that she does not have originals left to start over with

And of course now she is falsely claiming that one of the highly rated members of these forums told here to hack her iPhoto application - I know what that has not occurred since I've been here - some Spammer or low level poster may have but no high level volenteers have posted those instructions here
it was here on these forums that I originally found the code edit, so I had hoped that the advice given on these Apple forums from highly rated people was tried and true.
That simply is false - that type of false statements and her attitude make it really hard to assist her

Wow... MY attitude? I thought I was asking my question quite politely and was asking for a legitimate answer. Not:
you did stupid things to your photos in your library and there is no way to tell how much you messed up
and:
I do strongly suggest tha you never mess with things you do not understand if you care about your photos at all
This is simply rude and not good customer service (or voluntary help). It's simply trying to show that you know more than others. I was not asking to be told that I was stupid or what I do or do not understand. I was more than willing to get advice from the people willing to help others out on here, but I will be calling Apple directly from here on.
