iCloud on an iMac PowerPC G5?

We have:

  1. Mac Pro (Lion)
  2. iPhone4 (iOS5)
  3. iPad1 (iOS5)
  4. iMac PowerPC G5 (Leopard -10.5.8)

We've been using MobileMe to sync our Contacts and Calendars on all our equipment even our old G5!

We're about to upgrade to iCloud and have been holding off hoping that a workaround might evolve for older Macs running older an OS like Leopard.

Is there any way yet (or ever) that we'll be able to keep our iMac G5 in the sync loop after converting to iCloud?

Thx,

Steven

I'm not sure I understand the relationships here. Is it that the Leopard versions of Addressbook and iCal cannot interact with the syncing process that iCloud does? You say a G5 can't run iCloud. I'm assuming the computer doesn't actually run a program called "iCloud" that it's a matter of the Lion Addressbook and iCal have build into them the ability to interact with iCloud servers. Right?

iCloud doesn't have a program as such, as you say, but in Lion there is an iCloud Preference Pane which is used to log into it and thus enable calendar, bookmarks, contacts and email syncing.

You may be able to enter the email server settings manually in Mail. There is a hack forsyncing Snow Leopard calendars with iCloud but I don't know whether it works with Leopard - nor whether it's reliable or likely not to stop working at some future date (as is not uncommon with hacks). AFAIK no-one has managed to get contacts to sync on a pre-Lion Mac.

It's also possible you may be able to access the various sections of icloud.com - email, calendar and so on - but it does require a reasonably up-to-date browser and I don't know exactly which browsers will or won't play nice with it.

We're at an interesting juncture. As Apple has drawn a line in the sand called iCloud, it blows out all things not iOS5 or Lion. That's severe.

I'm hoping that some techy out there, writes a 3rd party app like the way Now Up To Date was created to interface with Addressbook and iCal, but this will be for earlier OS systems for those of us who have legacy machines we don't want to make door stops of then quite yet.

Hi a99slk,

I got this reply from Chronosnet re SOHO Organizer for those interested:

"Our new company policy is to develop new versions of our products that work on the current OS (Lion) and one version earlier (Snow Leopard). So we won't be developing new versions for 10.5.x going forward. After todays Mountain Lion announcement, when it releases later this summer, we'll be targeting Lion and Mountain Lion.

SOHO Organizer 9 currently works on 10.5.8 and you can download a free 30 day trial on your iMac. Yes, it will be able to connect to iCloud servers for contact and calendar sharing. Feel free to give it a try."

I also have a iMac PowerPC running 10.5.8

I can access my icloud account via the icloud.com website, using Safari 5.0.6

just login with your apple ID you used for your icloud.

You can access e-mails, can see the calendar and add or remove to the calendar etc.

as for using ical, NO... icloud is not supported.

You require an Intel imac running Lion OS.

This is all correct: just to add that you can also access iCloud email in the Mail application:

Let's assume that you have a PPC Mac and an iOS5 phone. The phone and iCloud online will sync with each other, but the Mac will not be able to see the iCloud calendars. Any amendments you make there will not transfer to iCloud, and therefore not to the phone. The same of course applies to any other iOS5 devices - they will sync with each other through iCloud but the PPC Mac will be left out of it.

Mar 6, 2012 2:44 PM in response to Roger Wilmut1

FORGET USING iCAL on the PPC.

It just does not work with iCloud...End of Story...

We wish it would, but we all know that Apple will NOT update it for an out of date system.

Apple would tell us all to buy the latest Apple computer.

I personally do not use the icloud mail, as I have being using Yahoo for such a long time now and i can use it with MS Outlook on my windows laptop, and and it syncs to my icloud, and I use an iPad too.

Only tonight I updated my iClould calendar from my aging old iMac iSight ppc... using the icloud website. and the updates have appeared without problems on both my iPad and my windows based laptop using MS Outlook, all synced together via icloud.

My iPad is running IOS 5.0.1

So if you do not want to invest in a new all singing all dancing iMac.. then using the icloud website, and as Roger rightly points out configuring the mail application to accept icloud mail will be your only options.

Certainly can't use ical per se on a PPC Mac, but Busy Cal works just fine on the PPC Mac. And it's really easy to add an iCloud calendar to your PPC Mac running BusyCal, once you've set up an icloud calendar on your intel mac with iCal.

John Slavin

That's correct, and if you want Contacts as well as Calendars you can use Soho Organizer instead of BusyCal.

Csound1: we are getting rid of the PPC so my original post in this thread is now moot.

BUT... I am still on the fence about iCloud and Lion. It will cost me a fortune to upgrade to Lion, like getting CS5.5 and I'm not even sure that works 100% with Lion, and the latest Filemaker Pro, and Office...

And the only reason for all this is so I can sync my calendars and contacts. Other than that I have absolutely now use or reason to upgrade to Lion. Having used a Mac since 1985, this is the very first time I've every said anything remotely like this.

I am totally worried about upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion given all the issues I have read about on RoaringApps.

I LOVE Snow Leopard and see no reason to upgrade to Lion other than MobileMe is going away. Crazy.

Does Soho Organizer allow you to sync with your Apple devices if you're OSX is Snow Leopard?

If so... THAT would be my answer.

Thanks,
Steven
