Macbook Pro connecting to projector via hdmi, can't get rid of desktop image

I'm connecting a projector to my Macbook Pro via hdmi, using VLC to play Quicktime files through the projector. How do I get rid of the desktop in the projected image so only the video file is seen? Thanks.

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.5.6)

go to display preferences in the toolbar at the top right or in system preferenes. go to arrangement and uncheck "Mirror Displays"

now arrange the two displays to how you want them. wherever the two displays meet is the side you drag your media to. Drag, VLC's movie window to your projector screen. Double click the movie to be fullscreen.

if you want to still use your computer while in this mode, by default vlc will blacken all yoru screens.

if you don't want this to happen go to vlc prefernces, video and then uncheck the option to black screen in fullscreen mode.
