Changing spaces with multiple displays

If you have two displays, the built-in laptop display and an external monitor, how do you change spaces on the built-in display but not on the external monitor? i want to have multiple desktops open on the built-in display and switch between them, while watching a movie on the external display, so the external should be constant and should not change space when changing the space on the primary display. how is this done?
