Q: Can't deactivate iMessage after switching phones?

I bought an Android phone tonight, replacing my iPhone.  I also ported my number to the new phone.  However, now, anytime someone with an iPhone tries to SMS me, their phone automatically sends it as an iMessage, which I can't receive, since I no longer use my iPhone.  How do I deactivate my phone number with iMessage so that I can start receiving text messages from my iOS-using friends again?

iPhone 4S, iOS 5.0.1

The suggested solution didn't work for me, but changing my Apple password did indeed work.

I have just siwtched from a iphone 4 to samsung galaxy s3 and i am having the same similar problem. Everyone who wants to txt me can still go thru after they send it as a txt message but when people who are using iphones txt me imessage is still the first option they get. It causes problems between txting however my iphone is wiped clean and not even on my products in my apple support page. I dont want to keep having this issue especially if someone is in need of txting me and they are unaware of my situation and dont know to send as regular txt message. I even tried to do the suggested steps by Alphonsusjude but couldnt solve problem. Any suggestions?

This is still an issue. I have read through and tried everything on here, but calling, that is my next step. I traded in my iphone 4 for a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and now I cannot receive text messages from any iphone user except one. Others have changed my contact information and deleted all past imessage conversations etc, and nothing has worked and it has been a week and a half.

I recently purchased a Samsung S5 and ported my number over from an old Iphone S4 and had all sorts of imessage problems. I followed every trick and suggestion stated on all the forums and still have people sending me imessages that never come through. I have deactivated and removed any reference of my phone number from my icloud account and my messages account. My number is no where to be seen so where are the imessage texts going that people are sending? some people are being told that the imessage was unsuccesful and then were prompted to send via sms text....but not all.

This is a dissaster! I can not run the risk, in my line of work, of not getting someones text msg. Apple...you need to deal with this NOW. I am now telling everyone I know how messed up iphone and imessage is...this is garbage!

I switched to the S5 as well and still cannot get imessages after following all the support instructions and spending hours on the phone with apple. Horrible horrible customer service. I will never get another iphone again.

I apologize about the odd style but I'm using voice rec software.  I just got the Galaxy S five and I have this problem too after weeks of searching online I finally figured out the problem it is with iMessage even if you have your old phones imessage switched off. you have to get your friends to text you normally and send. If the text bubble shows up blue, press and hold choose option send as SMS or text and the bubble will change to green green means SMS blue is the iMessage so its up to the iPhone user to take literally a half of an extra step to send a text to you and if they don't do that then they're just jerks

Already read a few discussions on the forums about this, including some of the long thread above, but here's my problem.

    Just switched from a 3GS to a Moto G (Android 4.4.3)

Turned off iMessage on the 3gs before factory resetting it and also delisted the phone from iTunes and Apple ID etc.

But other iPhones still try to send me messages as iMessages which list as delivered but I obviously don't receive.

Called Apple Support to ask them to manually deactivate iMessage on my number.  American lady I spoke to struggled to understand the problem, then suggested it would be solved if I changed my email address.  After carefully explaining again I was told that it isn't possible for Apple to manually deactivate iMessage on my number.  Eventually she decided that this wasn't an Apple issue at all and that I need to talk to my carrier.  When obviously it is solely an Apple issue.

Suggestions as to what I might do now would be very much appreciated!  Thanks in advance for any info
