Q: "Invalid Sim" - Apple has, at last, ackowledged the problem

Seems like Apple has acknowledged that there's in fact a problem (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4148) and released a new build to fix it:http://www.macrumors.com/2011/12/16/new-ios-5-0-1-build-9a406-intended-to-fix-no -sim-card-errors-on-iphone-4s/

I'm already trying it!

It seems that the feedback is a bit mixed...some say that it fixes the problem, some say that it stays the same...worht the try!

Here's the direct link for the build: http://appldnld.apple.com/iPhone4//0...6_Restore.ipsw

If you have a PC with Windows OS, just go to iTunes, press "Shift" + Restore, select the downloaded file and restore yout phone.

If you would like to keep your settings, do a backup prior to this because,, if you don't, you'll loose all your data. I choosed to not do that, and perform a "clean" install.

No problems so far, but then again, I'm getting this issue when I leave the phone in the Gym's locker (very poor signal).

So, I'll only be sure that it's fixed by Monday/Thursday...

I got a replacement phone from apple due to the invalid SIM issue. I updated the new phone to the 'new' 5.0.1 and I still get the invalid SIM problem once a day so far(consistenly between 4-6am for 3 days now)This is better than 3-4 times a day but I hope apple notices that the problem has not been resolved and really works to eliminate this it in the next update. This is EXTREMELY frustrating now.

Hmm, have you tried the replacement phone for a while and get the same issues prior to upgrading to the latest ios?

Hi, I had the same problem when I moved my dad from the iPhone 4 to the 4s. I kept getting invalid sim and no service. I had restored the iphone from itunes from his back up.

After seeing this issue I erased the iphone and set it up as a new phone. Then put back all his info and media. The problem seems to have resolved itself. Trying setting up the phone as a new phone and then syncing to iTunes. Remember, complete iphone set up on the phone first.

I have already done this as I got invalid sim on my newly replaced 4s. The restore and set up as a new phone seemed to work but I got invalid sim after two days and recently I have been having trouble making outgoing calls, the same problems on my previous 4s have not been resolved. What I have noticed is that I get in slid sim less frequently and outgoing calls do not fail 100% of the time on my first attempt with he replacement. I am still very frustrated about this none the less.

A new problem cropped up as well, my iTunes does not recognize the phone as an existing phone so I cannot make a backup.  It only gives me the options to  either restore from backup or set up as new phone when I connect to iTunes.

How long has 'set up as new phone'  worked for your dad's 4s?

My Dad'd phone has no issues of invalid sim since the last 6 days. However it does drop calls and sometimes shows "no service". However the no service issue happened only once. I rebooted the phone and no issues sionce the last 4 days. I think this is definitley a sofware issues. Just to be on the safe side also have your sim changed to a micro sim. Vodafone in India had a lot of issues when the 4s releases. None of their sims would work. They did correct it from the back end.

I swapped my iPhone 4 for my girlfriends 4S using my existing SIMCARD from the 4 I had to my new 4S. I then got the invalid SIMCARD error after a couple of hours or less. I did the basics, removed the SIMCARD, cleaned it etc etc etc bla bla bla. Only rebooting the phone cleared the INVALID SIMCARD error but it then returned after a while.

So, I did some more troubleshooting & found when I disabled 3G & Mobile data in the Networks menu. I did not get the error all day, UNTIL I really needed to use the internet and had to enable it I left them enabled and guess what I got the INVALID SIM error again. So I narrowed it down even more. I then found when I enable data my phone tries to enable HOTSPOT. I have never used the hotspot facility before and don’t intend to. It tries to enable the Hotspot for mins or hours roughly around the sometime the INVALID SIM error appears again.

To cut a long story short, I contacted my provider & I ordered a new SIM and at the same time reported the fault with my provider & lastly I asked them to change my tariff to a cheaper tariff for other reasons I told them I changed my phone and no longer had a iPhone 4 anymore as I have put my SIM into a 4S. They updated their system & changed my details to an iPhone 4S from the IPhone 4.

SO MY FIX: First If you have upgraded to an IPhone 4S or bought a new iPhone 4S contact your provider and tell them to update your details making sure they have the correct phone and you have the correct tariff. Because the some data plans or tariffs enable allow certain functions or services to work on different phones (Hence why I mentioned the HOTSPOT issue). Second tell them to send you a NEW Simcard as your SIM might be out of date or an old version or faulty batch. I haven’t had the INVALID SIMCARD issue since my SIM arrived. I havent had the problem SINCE... enjoy...

    Hey Guys,

I also got the invalid sim on my iphone 4s.

I updated the iOS to 5.01 (9A406) --- still got invalid sim

I went to iphone store = They replaced my phone with a new 4s and it worked fine for a few days

Today, lo and behold = AGAIN, i got invalid sim.

My new phone is iOS 5.01 (9A405) so i am going to try to update to 9A406 but i am worried this plagued invalid sim thing will never go away like what happened to my phone before.

I read somewhere that even if you change the sim, it still does not go away. (My sim works fine in other none iphone phones

Is there any further solution right now other than updating to (9A406)?

    Thanks

did you speak to you provider and ask them to confirm your tarrif? I asked my mobilephone company to downgrade my tarrif to a cheaper iphone tarrif & i also mentioned to them that i now have an iphone 4s and NOT  4. since then i havent had the problem since. I bet you when you use Siri on your phone it takes a long time to respnd. mine is now instant.. read my fix above it will work: morpheus0014

    Thanks morpheus for your input.

Now that i think about Siri is very slow to respond but not always - it varies.

I will try your fix and call the mobile company and see what happens.

    Thanks again

I have the same problem with my brand new iPhone S.  I just purchased this phone one week ago and already I have seen the error three times.  Of course, during the time it is in error mode, I have no service.  I will be returning this Phone to verizon for a new one.  I am not going to try messing around with a fix only to find out the fix does not work and run out of time to return the phone.
