Time capsule external disk back-up

Hi

I would like to move my iPhoto and iTunes library to an external HD. I also have a Time capsule. I thought about using that, but then I read that if I do so and Time Capsule breaks down, I risk losing the photos and music.

So I resolved on getting a new external HD (haven't done it yet)

The question I have is: can I back up the new external HD on time capsule? Otherwise I am back to square one, as if the new HD fails, I lose everything without backup.

Thanks

Mac OS X (10.5.4), MacBook Pro

Make sure that the new external drive is formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Connect it to your Mac using either USB or FireWire (preferred).

But, since the external drive will be "excluded" from backups by default.....you need open Time Machine Preferences, then click on the Options button.

Click the external drive to highlight it, then click the - (minus) button at the bottom of the list to remove the drive from the list of items that are excluded from backups.

Now Time Machine will backup both your Mac and the external hard drive.
