How to quiet a noisy mac pro?
I have a mac pro from 2008, a dual quad core 3.0 Intel Xeon model, which I have upgraded to 12 GB of RAM and to an ATI Radeon HD 4870 Graphics card.
From the very outset, even before those upgrades, this machine has always been very noisy. It's like working next to a car engine. I took it for granted when it was new that this was simply a tradeoff for what seemed like a lot of processing power at the time. However, the more I hear other people talking about their mac pros, the more I hear people saying their machines run nearly silently.
Is there anything I can do to make my machine quieter? I do a lot of video work on it and I have to use headphones to hear the video over the sound of the computer. I am very tempted to downgrade to an Imac hoping that it will reduce the noise.
I have tried to reset the SMC by unplugging the cables from the machine and restarting it, and I have cleaned the inside of the machine as thoroughly as I can without any specialist equipment.
Any advice would be great. Maybe my machine is just a lemon, but if I can improve it I would like to try.
Many thanks in advance
