Q: Ipod 160Gb Problem

Hi

I have run into a problem with my ipod and was hoping someone could help me figure it out..

When I try to add songs to my ipod I get to around 1,700 songs transfered then it bugs out.. it either freezes / crashes / or transfers at an incredibly poor

speed.

When I then replug the ipod to my mac it gives an error saying that the disk is corrupted and needs restoring... Also on occasion it says that the library is locked. If I then replug the ipod it usually gets rid of the library error, only for the disk corruption message to appear.

I also did a diagnostics test (by pressing the boot combo) and all tests were passed without error. I have tried reformating the drive using disk util, and I have also restored the ipod countless times.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

iPod classic, Mac OS X (10.7.2)

    Hi,

This is the SMART DATA results of my iPod after running the erase super fix instruction.

    Restracts: 3

    Reallocs: 16376

    Pending sectors: 0

    PowerOn Hours: 122

    Start/Stops: 4090

    Temp: Current 37C

    Temp: Min 18C

    Temp: Max 56C

My Reallocs is very high, does that mean my iPod classic 160GB is beyond safe?

Everytime after restoration, I tried syncing my iPod again, even thou the sync is successful but as soon as I ejected my iPod, it shows "No Music" =(. I've limited my smart playlist to sync 1 song at a time only but still it could not write 1 song to my iPod successfuly.

Is it a hard drive issue?

Your iPod's hard drive is beyond all hope.

hval, yes, as you can see the realloc is very high, the Pending Sector would be high too, but I think your superfix fixed that. However if it is still under warranty, bring it in to Apple Store.

The High Start/Stops indicate problems accessing the boot sector and writing the filesystem data.

My iPod Classic 160GB is having similar issues: can't sync or freezes with iTunes. Even though both iPod and iTunes are up to date and I'm doing everything on a Mac Computer.
I tried restoring it to factory settings 4 times. Erase everything from it. I am able to erase it all after waiting for hours of freezing iTunes and all.
But when I try putting back songs and content, it shows me I have "zero songs, zero videos, etc", even though my iPod shows I have "90GB of content".

I've been in this snowball forever!

My iPod was working perfectly fine until I decided to sync it back with my computer to upload silly 5 new songs I bought. Ever since then, I am unable to use it.
I tried everything. Will someone please help me?

    turingtest2:

I want to thank you for your wonderful solution... I bought my 160 GB iPod Classic in early 2008, and today (10/27/2015) I had problems when I tried to reboot it. I went through all the steps running diagnostics, then disk repair with Disk Utility, finally came to the unhappy conclusion I had to erase, reformat, and restore it. I couldn't have done it without you. You're the man!!!

    Everyone:

The key to a happy ending is taking it step, by step, with what turingtest2 listed in his solution... The steps are exactly laid out the way troubleshooting HD/System issues with the iPod should be done. If you've done all the steps, and you're still having problems then your HD, or logic board, is probably hosed. Don't panic! There are lots of places where you can get it repaired, or you could get the components, and repair it yourself. I highly recommend iFixit if you want to try your hand at fixing it yourself.

    Good luck!

The noise is probably the drive trying to read a damaged section over and over and failing. You can try erasing the iPod and then reloading it. You need to get the existing pending sectors converted into reallocs. You may need to erase and restore the iPod a few times to achieve this. If the counts stabalize then you may get some more useful life out of the iPod.

Yes. Try the alternate methods, DFU restore or the "Super Fix", then check the stats again before starting to load content.

Many thanks for this post; it's by far the most helpful thing I've ever discovered in any Apple or Microsoft forum.

I had a problem on my iPod classic while listening to an audio book.  At a specific point in the playback, it would immediately return to the menu showing the chapter listing, with not "Resume" option.  I could manually skip to the next chapter, but when I tried to rewind to the previous point I'd heard, it would always return to the menu.  This seemed likely to be a problem with the hard drive, but I wasn't certain which steps to take, and in what specific sequence, in order to fix the problem.  After checking the S.M.A.R.T. diagnostic data (of which I was previously unaware), I used the "Select-Play" sequence and allowed Windows to "fix" the drive.  After that, I restored the iPod and then re-loaded it from iTunes.  Problem (apparently) solved, and the "Retracts" count dropped by about 25%.

Again, many thanks for your informative and useful contribution.
