iTunes shows my iPhone as over capacity, iPhone disagrees (screenshots)

I turned on iTunes Match yesterday on my Mac & iPhone 4S. I deleted all of the files on my Mac and redownloaded the 256kb/sec versions, and turned off music syncing on my iPhone, sync'd (wiped the music), turned it off, turned it on again, then let it sync all of the music from the cloud overnight.

However, now when I sync my iPhone 4S on my Mac it says that the music has filled (over filled, infact) the iPhone 4S and it's over capacity by 3.2gb with music using up around 10Gb or more of storage, yet the iPhone itself thinks only 5.9gb is in use.

I sync'd it with iTunes again and it hasn't made any difference.

iTunes says 11.8gb of audio and 3.2gb over capacity:

iPhone 4S says that only 5.8gb is in use for music, and 2.8gb is available:

Any ideas?

I'm seeing this also, on both my iPhone and iPad. I have enabled iTunes match, which has all started up and syncs (more or less) correctly but am getting frequent over capacity messages.

I think it's a cosmetic bug in the iTunes capacity gauge. With my devices, if I come out of iTunes and re-start, the gauge shows the correct capacity. That is, it matches what the iDevice reports.

But when I start a sync, the gauge seems to double in capacity the readings for those files stored in iTunes match.

I wonder if the gauge is showing what is already on the iDevice, PLUS what is available in iCloud?

In any case, it still all seems to work correctly - the iTunes sync runs ok on my Mac, and the device still has the correct amount of capacity available. It's just the gauge showing wrong.

Hopefully a fix will come. It is a bit annoying though 😐

Same thing, and it also makes iTunes flaky and unreliable. Seemed to happen because I was going out of wifi range so I set a big playlist ("recently added") to download from the cloud. I've since been back through and laboriously turned off download song by song, but it still says way over capacity on iTunes, although it no longer does on my phone.

At least the phone is now usable.

this is a glitch with itunes because of match.

what you could do, is delete all music on your iphone (within the itunes sidebar while it is connected). This will reset itunes to knowing you have zero music on your iphone. the only problem is that you will have to redownload songs (either one at a time or in groups) that you plan on listening to while you may not have a good data reception

This morning I figured out what causes this. When you use iTunes match, iTunes match manages the music on your iPhone. Problem is, if you have not deleted all the songs on your iPhone first, then iTunes still sees them as on your phone even if you've deleted them on your phone.

Here is the fix:

Turn off iTunes match in iTunes.

Turn off iTunes match on the iPhone.

Close iTunes and reopen.

Connect your iPhone.

Go into your music folder for the iPhone and delete all the songs.

Turn back on iTunes match in iTunes

Turn back on iTunes match on the iPhone

i don't know how everyone synced before itunes match, but only use itunes match to download music on the go. then turn off itunes match on your laptop and iDevice, and just "manually manage music and video" whenever itunes match is off. that bug doesn't exist when i "manually manage music and video". if you're away from home and you need to turn on itunes match on your computer, download "teamviewer" for your computer and get the free app. it let's you acess your computer from any other computer or iphone. it gives you an ID number and you set your own password or use one that is randomly generated. i have yet to hear of "teamviewer" users who have ever been hacked VIA "teamviwer"

i hope i am usefull!! if you'd like to not use itunes, there is copytrans or pwnTunes via iphone jailbreak.

Tried the method of cycling iTunes Match but it doesn't seem to have worked. iPhone reporting 4.5 GB free (and Music as "No Data"), iTunes saying I'm 7+ GB over capacity.

Having to transfer podcasts manually to get any music on the phone. I really don't want to have to make a trip to the Genius Bar to see if they can sort it out but it's looking that way (which will entail lugging my external HD where the music is stored as well).

Don't think I'll be renewing iTunes Match at $25USD a pop when it comes up again. I don't like the idea of paying money to cause my devices to work *less* well.
