Restart the computer, when you hear the Start Up tone hold down the Option key and then select the Restore Partition and run Repair Disk Permissions from Disk Utility. Repair Disk Permissions at least 2x and while you are in Disk Utility run Repair Disk 2x too. Then exit Disk Utility and restart in Safe Mode, this will clear some caches. It's possible one or more cache became corrupt. Next try to restart normally.

The system was working fine before the update.

I got severals errors with the restore disk permissions the first time I ran it. The second time it didn't return any errors. The disk utility din't return any errros.

After booting in safe mode and hhaving the system hang again I ran the repair disk permission utility again and keep getting the same errors that are being repaired even after running it 5 times is a row.

The Imac is 3 months old and came with Snow Lzapord installed whitch I upgraded to Lion after startup thru the up-to-date program Apple offered.

Thanks for all the help seeing this is my first Mac

The messages you are getting in Repair Disk Permissions can probably be safely ignored, Apple talks about this in Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions messages that you can safely ignore.

However you did not mention anything about running Repair Disk in Disk Utility, did you do this 2x? If not then please do and see if it reports any errors. If it doesn't then the drive is probably OK and your download was corrupt. Let me know before we continue.

OK then I suspect the update was corrupted somehow. Restart again like you did before and instead of choosing Disk Utility choose the Reinstall Mac OS X and let it reinstall. If that still doesn't work then you will need to contact AppleCare (no charge if you have already bought AppleCare) or you can make an appointment at your local Apple Store or AASP so they can help you out.
