You have duplicated the country code. Remove either the +1 or the (1). But then the phone number is invalid. There are no US phone numbers that start with 1. The lowest number after the country code (1) is 2, and US phone numbers are all 10 digits.

I had the same issue with error +1 (1) (216) 116-11 when trying to text my son. I was able to call him, but not text him. The day before it worked just fine. My husband could text him. The only thing I did, was change his phone "name" in my contacts. He has 2 phones & 2 phone numbers. So I marked this particular number as iPhone. After that, I couldn't text him. FRUSTRATING to say the least! I deleted all previous text conversations. I deleted him as a contact altogether. I rebooted my iPhone and re-entered him as a contact. That did not work. I deleted him as a contact again, re-booted again, then I re-added him as a contact from my call log! BOOM. It's working!!!

Somebody suggested deleting the call log too. If you can call that person ask them to give you about 10 mins and then call you. Try deleting any contact info for that number. Any previous texts or attempts to text and the call log. Re-boot the phone. When that person calls you, add them to your contacts. Do they have an iPhone too? I dunno. I was getting real Pi$$ed for days and no other solutions helped me until what I did today. So I feel your pain! Good Luck.

I was having the same problem and here is how I fixed it.

I have fixed this problem on my iphone.

1. Delete all record of the problem number that will not except text messages.

Including contact, favorites, call log, text log...

2. send a text message to the phone number manually make sure to include the area code, no 1 needed.

3. click the sms button on your home screen, then select the number you just sent the message to and create a new contact from there.

GLA40, I went through the process that BugLip described and had success. I deleted all occurances of the number in my text message, group and single messages. Then I also deleted all phone calls with that number. Finally, I deleted the entire contact. Then, I reentered the number into my contacts, with the area code, and successfully sent a text message to the individual. I also made sure to write down the number before I deleted the number from my phone. I hope this helps.

Error invalid number. Please re-send using a valid 10 digit mobile number or valid short code.

I believe this problem stemmed from me adding a person to my iPhone’s contacts without the area code. Even when I went back into my contacts to edit the phone number with the area code, I was unsuccessful at shaking the error. Making a completely new contact and clearing the conversation’s contents didn’t resolve the problem either. The real solution, as it turns out, is to totally delete the conversation from the Text Messages screen.

To delete the entire conversation, tap the Edit button on the main Text Messages screen. Press the minus symbol next to the problematic conversation and confirm that you want to delete it. That should be all you need to do, aside from adding the area code to your contact’s phone number.

Don't forget to delete the text messages that came from alerting you to the error. The number is probably listed in there without the area code. Also, any previous calls, voice mails - even deleted ones, you have to go in the deleted voice mails and clear them, etc. Then power off and power on the phone again. Go to messages, create a new message up at the top and type in the number with area code. If anything comes up while you are typing that in - contact name, the number completed with our without area code, etc. that means the number is still somewhere on your phone. You have to get it all the way gone before you can have a successful text (or at least I did) I powered the phone off and on 5 times before I found them all. I did finally get success! Good luck.

I just arrived in Israel. 2 am. trying to contact my family who had a SIM card put In their phone. Finally got the # and have been trying to text for two hours. I got re same error message as Scott. Finally got a message through after reading this entire thread. I turned off dial assist. Not sure if that did anything. Set my region to Israel. Then I deleted all bad records. Conversations, contacts, recents, etc. I rebooted the phone and entered + 972 and the number w/out 011 in front of it. I had to add 011 in fromy of the 972 and drop the plus. I also dropped the 0. So +972 523989783 did not work but 011972523989783 did work. I had to delete, restart several times and I am cautiously optimistic but I will celebrate when I get a return text the original number my nephew gave me was just 05223989783. I had to drop the 0 which is only for calling from Israel number to Israel #. Then I added 011972 without the +. This has taken me about 3 hours of Internet research of discussion threads such as this! Thank god for the internet!

I did the steps mentioned here as best I could. No luck.

I had noticed one number giving me this error. Then I had an impt meeting and the person's number also gave me the error. ...They could text me but I couldn't text back. We could both call each other. Then my brother's number malfunctioned. I'd been texting him no problem.

I brought phone into ATT and they updated my OS and gave me a new sim chip. No help. I did a restore and backup. No help. They sent me to the Apple Store.

They had me do a different kind of restore -- where you press power and home with phone plugged into iTunes on a laptop. Then let go of the power button then the hope button when the image of an apple AND A CORD appear. I did all that. The support guy also said to restore from a back up but I noticed that I didn't have to so maybe I goofed this step?

Anyway, no help.

I've gone thru and really purged my logs of my brother's number. ...I note that his number started malfunctioning immediately after I got the service from ATT (update, new sim).

Ideas?

SUCCESS! I first called the number to have it in my "Recents" list; then I tried your method of deleting everything but the call log; hard reset (press power & home for 10 seconds); restart; go to "Recents" call log and "Create New Contact" from the phone number; change "home" to "mobile" in the "New Contact" page; then I tried a text which worked! I have an iphone 6 with system 9.3.5. (I refuse to update because my wife's system 10.3 has too many changes that I find extremely annoying)
