It depends on the car. My car has a built-in 110 VAC outlet.

The ones that don't, I would not recommend because there isn't presently enough charge in the cigarette lighter to support the 85W of power in many of the smaller cars neecessary for most of the MacBook Pros.
That device infringes Apple's patent on the MagSafe adapter, which has never been licensed.

I purchased a "car kit" from Apple when I purchased my MBP. It includes a cigarette lighter power inverter that puts out 120W made by Kensington. Several times I've run a slide show all day off a parked Jeep with no problems. I camp a lot, and it's nice to take some tunes & movies sometimes. No TV reception in the mountains.
