What generation is my macbook?

How do I find out what generation my MacBook is? I need to know when I have to download applications.

When you're at the desktop, go to the top left-hand corner where the toolbar is. Click on the apple logo icon (should be the farthest to the left) and click about this mac. There it should say all your details like version 10.4.9 or 10.6.2, etc. That is where your version is. If you double-click where it says the version is, it will show you the serial number also.
