When you're at the desktop, go to the top left-hand corner where the toolbar is. Click on the apple logo icon (should be the farthest to the left) and click about this mac. There it should say all your details like version 10.4.9 or 10.6.2, etc. That is where your version is. If you double-click where it says the version is, it will show you the serial number also.

To see which model you have go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info (and then System Report if you’re running 10.7 Lion). When System Profiler comes up check the Model Identifier.
