Q: Cannot get Line-In Audio to work at all

what do you have plugged in the line-in as a source? remember that it is a line-in (not a microphone in). And worst (at least in my MBP), either using a pre-amp the signal is to low.

The only that works good to me was buying a separed analog to USB device to record using microphone.

press and hold the OPTION key then click the little speaker icon on the menu bar, a more detailed drop down will show you how you're set up. it might help you.

go to sys prefs/sound and choose to display volume in the menu bar.

then you can do the click and see the extra info.
