Shuffle will not install and is turning off internet connection

I have a new 4th gen Shuffle and an iPad2. My iPad2 is synching fine with iTunes. When I try to install and synch my new shuffle, it locks up when it is checking the software status on the shuffle. Worst, it then disables / locks my wireless Internet adaptor. I have to disconnect the Shuffle, turn off iTunes, unplug my wireless adaptor, reconnect the wireless adaptor to be able to reconnect to the Internet. My Windows machine is running XP Pro. Any thoughts?
