The Universal Dock is just that, it's universal. But into it you place a Dock Adaptor, which is specific to the iPod you have.

You will need one of two adaptors. The older (original) 160GB Classic from 2007 requires adaptor number 10. The newer 160GB Classic (known as late 2009) requires adaptor number 9. Have a look on this page http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1380 for additional information, including inserting and removing adaptors form the Dock.

If you need to, here is the Apple page for identifying models; http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1353 .

By the way, for some strange reason, there is a brand of Dock designed for use only with one model of iPhone. I'm haven't yet worked out why someone would make a Dock that isn't universal.
