Optical Audio - Apple TV

Hi,

I Got an optical cable for my apple tv. I plugged it in to my tv on one end and the other end is in my apple tv. That is all the equipment i have. No reciever, or a surround sound set. Just the tv and the apple tv. There was no difference in sound when I plugged it in.

First off, am i allowed to go from my apple tv with an optical audio cable directly to my tv? most people have a reciever in between, which I do not. Is it required that I have more than just a tv and apple tv? What I was expecting was to get a clearer sound when I applied the optical audio cable and that did not happen. User error or is it my equipment?

Secondly, if it is allowed, then how do I get the optical audio to push through.

There are red lights on both ports, and there is a red light on the cable. The cable is GOOD. the Aquos TV is GOOD. The apple tv is GOOD.

Suggestions? What should I be expecting when it works?

Thanks

Willumpku, I have a similar problem, I have a stereo amp with no optical input, So I bought an optical/RCA converter box and I'm connecting the optical out of the apple tv into the converter box and the rca cables from the converter box into my receiver. The TV is connected to the Applte TV with an HDMI cable. This is not working, no sound at all. Please help!

Hi Frankoys,

First of all I'm not a specialist but also a consumer who's sufferIng from problems with the Apple TV. But in this particular case the problem you have is different to what's discussed in this thread. Your configuration seems technically OK to me but the Apple TV doesn't always deliver what is promised by Apple.

But to offer any additional help with this I need to know what it is you want with this configuration. Do you want to hear the sound of your TV (via the Apple TV) at your stereo(speakers) or do you want to hear the sound of your stereo through the speakers of your TV set ?

I have an Apple TV set up in a high school Media Center with an LCD projector, a sound converter, and a mixer/amplifier. I can get sound only from the projector speakers, not from the mounted speakers. Here's what I've got:

I'm running a TOSLink optical cable from the Apple TV to the converter, then RCA cables to the mixer/amplifier.

I've called both Sewell and Apple and both support reps say the setup should work.

Am I missing something? I've tried two different RCA cables, two different projectors and two different Apple TV's, the red light on the optical cable works...

Do I have a defective converter? Any other ideas?
