I just purchased an iPad2 as a Christmas present and have not yet used it.
When using it on a desktop I would like a conventional keyboard and a mouse or touchpad.
Can I use any keyboard and mouse that works with a mac.

You can use a bluetooth keyboard with the iPad but no mouse of any type. There is no cursor on the iPad - it is a touch screen device. A mouse will not work.

OK, no mouse for the iPad.
Wouldn't a wired keyboard connected with USB via the iPad Camera Connector also work and obviate the need for batteries?

You cannot use the USB and the CCK to connect a keyboard. That doesn't work. Only a bluetooth keyboard will work.

You can in fact use a wired keyboard with the iPad2 by utilising the USB unit supplied with the CCK.
When you first connect the keyboard to the iPad2 it will tell you the device cannot be used as it is not supported. Dismiss that message and use the keyboard as normal. All of the normal keyboard functions work in any app where the iPad keypad function works.

There is one major caveat to this: Because the CCK supplies relatively little amperage, especially after iOS 4.3, a lot of keyboards simply require too much power to work properly. This includes Apple's own wired keyboards. Although you can get around the problem by placing a powered USB hub in-between the keyboard and CCK.
I personally use a wired keyboard myself. Its particular power requirements are low enough to run off the CCK directly.
