More Ram on my imac 7.1

Hi,

Here's what I have:

iMac

Model Identifier: iMac7,1

Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo

Processor Speed: 2 GHz

Number Of Processors: 1

Total Number Of Cores: 2

L2 Cache: 4 MB

Memory: 2 GB

Bus Speed: 800 MHz

Boot ROM Version: IM71.007A.B03

SMC Version (system): 1.20f4

My iMac is just over 3.5 Years old, and now out of wauranty. My HD was replaced about a week ago, and I now have a 500GB HD. What I'm looking to do now is increase my RAM.

The Genious at the Apple store reccomended I buy this from OTC:

http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/5300DDR2S6GP/

He's recommending I buy a 6 GB set (a 2GB & a 4 GB)

What I don't understand is why I can't use 2 - 4GB (1 - 2GB in each slot)

I have 2 - 1 GB in ea. slot now for a total of 2GB.

I've read that my iMac can only handle up to 4GB of RAM. Is this correct?

Please confirm if it's OK to buy 6GB of RAM as he suggested...

Thanks!

Brian

Follow the Genius' advice, he's spot on. Your machine will handle 6GB of RAM and OWC (www.macsales.com) is a trusted vendor on these forums because they specialize in Macs, have great support and fair prices. The Genius did you a service by recommending OWC and the correct RAM for your machine so I'm not sure why you would second guess his advice.

Thanks rkaufmann87.....

Just a FYI... This particular Genious was wrong about another issue I had right before my HD crashed... so I didn't neccesarily second guess him, I've just emphisized that I have read that the most RAM my iMac can hold is 4GB. I'm a novice user, and not a wizzard, but thanks for your thoughts! I couldn't find on my own iMac where it says the Max RAM it can hold.... it would be nice if that were obvious to me.... thus the disscussion board!

Thanks again!

I see, I probably jumped to a conclusion prematurely not knowing of your experience with that particular Genius. However you are correct Apple specifies your iMac will only handle 4GB of RAM but OWC has tested and verified it will work fine with 6GB. I have been using 6GB on my late 2007 iMac for a couple of years now reliably. BTW installing RAM is very easy, you will find how-to videos on OWC's web site under their Tech Support link if you need it.
