Safari: google search box is vanished

Go to ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari

Move the Cache.db file from the com.apple.Safari folder to the Trash.

Restart your Mac, launch Safari. Try using the Customize Toolbar drop down window now.

~ (Tilde) character represents the Home folder.

For Lion: To find the Home folder in OS X Lion, open the Finder, hold the Option key, and choose Go > Library

Could be the preferences are corrupted ..

Go to ~/Library/Preferences. Move the com.apple.Safari.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Desktop.

Quit then relaunch Safari to test. If that helped, move the .plist file to the Trash.

You can reset the walllpaper from System Preferencs > Desktop & Screen Saver - Desktop

right mouse click where it would normally be and click "Customize Toolbar" and then drag the default bar to the top🙂

You reinstalled Safari using Lion Recovery? Not sure what you mean by "restore"...

Also, have you installed any third party Safari add ons lately?

Ok... it's Reset Safari from the menu bar not Restore. That's why I was confused.

Next, I wasn't referring to extensions. I was referring to third party add ons. Troubleshooting help at the link I posted previously.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account, or is system-wide. Enable guest logins and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select “Help” from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box.

While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Any application you run will behave as if you were running it for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.

As Guest, launch the application(s) and test. Same problem(s)?

After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.

With Safari open, try this: [Note that I'm using Safari 5.1.1, but you probably have a very similar version]

Go to the "View" menu. If the first entry is "Show Toolbar", click on it. (Most likely it was "Hide Toolbar", and you don't want to do that).

Now, go to "View" -> "Customize Toolbar...". An overlay dialog comes up, letting you choose how to customize your toolbar. At the bottom of the dialog, it says, "... or drag the default set into the toolbar". Grab the box with user interface widgets just beneath those words, and drag it up to the toolbar where it should be. Voila! (Or so I hope).

Type your question directly into the address/URL box. It doubles as a google search toolbar.

I was having this problem, too, but translucentmirror seems to have answered it. The update seems to have merged the address bar with the Google Search Bar, like it is in Google Chrome. So, it's not a problem, it's just an update. Now you can search easier.

As a person who works with multiple tabs and wants to keep the search box, this is driving me nuts. So thanks for your answer, which is correct, but for the way I work, I guess its on to firefox as my default browser. Don't like it as much as Safari, but life is too short.

BOO! My search bar just disappeared after a software update, as well. Merging the address bar and search bar is extremely frustrating. Bad move Apple. This does not create the user friendly, intuitive expericne your customers value.
