My computer recognizes my iPhone as a camera but it doesn't appear in iTunes??

My computer recognizes my iPhone as a camera but it doesn't appear in iTunes... how come? I am trying to sync my intunes library from my macbook to my new iphone 4S...

iPhone 4S, Mac OS X (10.4.11)
