download files to specific folder

is there a way to make safari to ask me where to download the file each time? there is a way to tell chrome to do it. It's just that always having files go to the download folder is inconvenient. I end up having to go there for each file, rename it and move it. There isn't even a simple way (that I've found) to move files. I can only move it 1 parent/child folder level at a time, it seems. Whereas if safari can be made to prompt me to browser for location & filename, that would make life much simpler.

Thanks.

I've seen suggestions in forums to rightclick->download file as, etc. but it does not work. It downloads an .html file instead of the actual file.

Probably because the link is not to a file, but to a script command which selects the file and server. If the URL is to an actual file, what you describe should work. Under the circumstances, probably your best option is to use Folder Actions and attach to the Downloads folder an Automator workflow which moves the downloaded file to the desired folder.

If you do a COMMAND 'S', the drop down menu allows you to load the file to several locations, 'Where' button. Also, if you click on the small arrow button to the right of the 'Export As' field, it will open up a menu that gives another option of where you want your download to be located. You can also change the format if you so desire. "Format' button.

Thanks for the responses, folks...

fane_i, you are right. web version of gmail show attachments as hyperlinks. within safari, once I click on that link, the attachment gets dumped into my download folder.

OGELTHORPE, because of that I suppose, command S, etc does not seem to work.

Shootist007, I do have chrome browswer installed. but I just thought having finally plunked down so much money on a mac, I should see what safari can do for me! Of course all this is probably can be avoided if I use the mac mail program. May be that cannot be avoided afterall.

I can't imagine how after chrome has been in the market for so long, safari has not chosen to copy this feature. may be that is on purpose.
