how do you turn off the prompt for your password every time you close the cover?

Uncheck the box in System Preferences, Security & Privacy, Require Password...

Apple menu>System Preferences>Security & Privacy>General

Under the general tab, is a user setting checkmark-box to mark, if you want to require password after sleep or screensaver begins.

Just uncheck it.
