Does it iPhone use data when connected to wifi?

So I am concisering buying an iPhone 4 for $99 for Verizon. I am needing to see what data plan I will need.

I am mostly at home & school & have wifi there but when I am connected to wifi does it use my data?

iPhone 4, iOS 5.0.1

Whenever you are connected to wifi, it will not use Data.

Once you are on wifi, it will not use your 3G data unless your wifi has a problem.


2GB of Data is more than sufficient if you have wifi turned on permanently. You only use Data when you are out of wifi range. Bear in mind streaming videos, tuning on Radio Apps and GPS map will consume a lots of Data if you are not within your connected wifi range.

When the iPhone goes to sleep it drops out of wi-fi to 3g (this has been verified with Apple). So if you have any app(s) running that is streaming or pushing data you will be using your data plan when the iPhone drops to 3g. I have run into another problem that I do not have an answer for. Once night a month something is running that uses 80MB to 120MB of 3g data.
