Imported CD files are gone?

I recently ripped a bunch of my cds to my itunes as lossless files. I then also, to free space on my main drive bought an external hard drive, to which I simply transfered my itunes music folder to. However, despite always having the option to save copies of all files added to ther library in said folder, all of my cds I imported are gone now, and I can't locate the files themselves in my itunes music folder, or anywhere else for that matter,
Am I just missing something, looking in the wrong place? Or did itunes delete my files or simply not even save permanent copies of them? I am confused.
