Q: Events and Projects Librarys Missing in FCPX (but folders and videos in finder exist)

Events and Projects Librarys Missing in FCPX (but folders and videos in finder exist)

I am now seriously annoyed at this.

All of my Events and Project Librarys are missing when I load up Final Cut Pro X. As its loading the splash screen it spins through that its reading the event library, restoring windows etc etc

But when its fully loaded up there are NO Events or Projects listed.

Can anyone advise what to do here?

Previous to this I had a solution where I kept rebooting the computer until they finally all showed up in FCPX again, but this has now completely stopped working.

All of my files still exist correctly, but its just like FCPX doesn't see them (they are all sitting on my internal HD)

I have files called

CurrentVersion.fcpevent

sitting in

Movies>Final Cut Events>(Name of Event)

and files called

CurrentVersion.fcpproject

Sitting in

Movies>Final Cut Projects> (Name of project)

All of my video media exists in

Movies>Final Cut Events>Name of Project>

Original Media

in their individual folders

If I double click from Finder and try to open a

CurrentVersion.fcpevent

I get the pop up

The document “CurrentVersion.fcpevent” could not be opened.

If I double click from Finder and try to open a

CurrentVersion.fcpproject

I get the pop up

The document “CurrentVersion.fcpproject” could not be opened.

Everytime I start up FCPX it creates a

NEW EVENT (plus the date)

in my Final Cut Events folder.

So, any help anyone?

I'm now thinking what a terrible choice it was to ever bother buying and spending weeks learning how to use FCPX properly and that I should have used a different video editing program instead.

This is seriously depressing

Tom, how do we go about permission issue? I tried everything mentioned in the forum including disk utility and permission check.

If you launch the application and new event is created and you put stuff in it and you cut a few shots into a project and you close the application, what happens to the event and project you created? Are they in the Movies folder? What happens when you relaunch the application?

When I launch the apps and created the event, the event is there in the movies folder. When I relaunch the apps, a new event created.

NEW FINDINGS: Last night I left my FCP X turned on while I working on one project. I leave the entire MBP on battery until the next day the MBP battery totally drained out (0% battery and the date resetted back to 2008).

I plugged in my power adapter and switch on my MBP, then I launch the FPX again and surprisingly found that previously created events on Macintosh HDD was all there and listed on the apps.

I relauch the apps again and it's there.

Don't worry, they'll be gone again soon.

I was able to resolve this issue by restarting in safe mode (holding down the shift key on startup), then starting up FCPX while logged in on safe mode (I don't know if this is a necessary step, but I tried it just to see). It gave me an error message saying that Final Cut's OpenGL needs aren't supported in safe mode, so I restarted the computer normally and all my events and projects are back.

PS: I know this thread has been up for a while, but it was one of the ones that helped me a lot on my search for a solution, so I figured I'd pay it back by sharing what I did that worked.

I am having all of the same issues.  FCP project files all gone.  FCP X opens up with no event or projects.  When trying to create a new project I get the message "The operation couldn't be completed.  Cannot allocate memory."  Cannot create new events or new projects.  I have several profiles on this machine.  One of the administrator profiles that had never run FCP X works fine.  I tried trashing the Preferences. No change.  I tried restarting in Safe Mode.  No change.  I checked the root directory for extra files.  None.

One additional weird behavior.  When I move files from one folder to another, the files dont move, they copy.  Example... I drag a JPG file from a folder that is on the desktop to the desktop... the file does not move, it copies.   This machine only has one HD on it, but it is acting like it has more than one.  Any file moved from one place to another requires authentication of the Admin password and then copies, not moves.  This could all be unrelated, but if the computer is somehow thinking that there is another drive and the media files are located on the second invisible drive, this might explain why they are all missing.  Again it is the FCP project files that are missing and new ones cannot be created.

    Any thoughts on this??

I too have the same issue as the OP.  I've also tried all of the potential remedies (s)he's listed... all to no avail.  The only other thing I have to add (other than my sympathies to all those also suffering this massive inconvenience) is that I recently (about two months ago) renamed my home folder as per these instructions: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1428 but my FCPX Events and Projects are all (and have always been) on one of my external drives... anyone else out there with any more bright ideas?

Are your events and projects in your Movies folder? If so, post a screen shot of your Movies folder.

Nope they're in the root of an external drive - always have been.  Pic attached.  Also, thanks for the quick response! FCPXevent_folder.jpg

Is this a clone drove of another drive? What exactly is happening in FCP? What are you seeing?

I solved my issue.  The issue was caused by a change in the permissions of the folder that holds all the project and event files.  I change the permissions of my user folder and then selected the "apply to enclosed items" option in the "get info" window.  This is what messed things up!!

To fix, I went back into the folder that encloses the project and event files and made sure that I had the correct permission to access these folders.  Once I reopened FCPX, all my files and projects were back.

Check your permissions to the Movies folder that is located inside your user profile folder.  To do this select the Movies folder, go to File>Get Info.  Under Sharing & Permissions make sure that your Name had Read and Write Privilege.

    Hi Tom

Nope it's not a clone, just and external drive that has always had my Final Cut Events and Final Cut Projects folder at its root since I upgraded to FCPX from FCS in April last year.

As for what's happening in FCPX, it's exactly as shippo_uk described:

As its loading the splash screen it spins through that its reading the event library, restoring windows etc etc

But when its fully loaded up there are NO Events or Projects listed.

I thought that might solve my issue too but sadly not... even tried giving read & write privledges to all users but no dice.  I'm wondering if the OP ever managed to solve the issue.

Repair permissions and run Disk Warrior on the drive.

Well that's me stumped. Just booted up and thought I'd check FCPX one last time and... everything has reappeard exactly as it should be - all events and projects all there!  I've rebooted 20 times to test and it all seems to work fine...   thanks for all your suggesteions Tom.
