I have since discovered/remebered that i asked this same question about 6 months ago, the "correct answer" was inconclusive.

Apparently the Apple cable for this purpose doesnt do Sound, which would be very usefull for me in the future. So i am now even more confused than i was before.

It would be much better if i could use the same cable/adapter on my iPad and/or iPhone ????

The inconclusiveness might have come from the fact that older MacBook Pros do not supply audio through the HDMI port, but newer ones do. I forget where the dividing line is, but I'm sure it can be looked up. The current Apple cable does carry sound over HDMI, it's only a question of whether your model of MacBook Pro does.

The FireWire port on your MBP doesn't output a video signal, so you can't connect it to a TV set. That's what your mini-Displayport is for.

If your MBP was made before April 2010, its mini-Displayport doesn't output audio. You can still use an audio-capable HDMI adapter with it, but there won't be any audio signal to carry until you get a newer MBP. This adapter is available at the Apple Store:

You can't use the same adapter with an iPad or iPhone. For that you'll need this adapter:

Besides the two adapters, you'll need a standard HDMI cable of the appropriate length, which you can use with either adapter.
