Canopus ADVC-55 not responding in FCP

I have been trying to log and capture from a VCR to my Canopus with Firewire connected to the rear of my Hard Drive. It try's to initialize and I get the spin ball. I have to unplug my firewire to start over. Sometimes as soon as I plug in the firewire I get the spin ball and have to remove the firewire to do anything. It is like my Mac is not liking the Canopus device anymore and wants to reject it.I have a Mac Pro 10.6.4 and I am using FCP 7.0
