Giving up on Lion

So after 2 weeks of battle I am going back to SL.

I have a MBP with NVIDIA cards on it so presumably part of my problems have been down to the NVDIA drivers being wrong - but I can't find out what exact problems that causes.

I also am aware that many years of upgrading OSX has accumulated a lot of stuff in my System folder that restoring from a time machine backup or using migration assistant or whatever doesn't clear out.

So I am installing SL fresh and reinstalling my applications from fresh and not restoring the system from a back up. I hope that, once the NVIDIA issue is sorted out that I can go back to Lion, but in 25 years of owning and working on Macs never had to do this before.....

Hi a brody

Thanks for the reply.

My MBP is a 5,2 and has NVIDIA GeForce 9400M and 9600M GT.

I am not sure what problems the NVDIA driver problem causes but I have to go back to a stable system for a while to regain my sanity. I thought I had fixed it quite a few times getting all the old crap out of various libararies and staying glued to Console. I leanrt a lot but.......

I am thinking that if I create a really clean SL install to work on for the next bit I will clone that and then try going to Lion again from that at a later point BUT just now it is taking up 40% of my time, rebooting, troubleshooting, staring at CONSOLE etc

If, over years, you added new OS over an older OS, perhaps it is high time for an erase-and-install method, so you may have a fresh, clean and wild Lion. Backup everything unto an external drive and, before reinstalling Lion, erase the disk first, then put back Lion. You will do that anyway if you wish to downgrade, so the effort is the same.

@etresoft - I have been through an extended troubleshooting process here and had loads of help from people lIke Linc Davis who have been great.

@cattus - It is really useful for me to find out some NVIDIA people arre having no problems. Are any of you running external displays?

I am running an external 1920 x 1200 display off my MBP- which I need for my workflow- and this feels like it is crashing some of the time in addition to the finder/spotlight/permissions problems. I contacted NVIDIA support but they weren't able to tell me what problems the driver issue would cause.

I am convinced it is multi factorial - the amount of old stuff in my System is definitely part of it, NVIDIA drivers affecting my external display may be part of it. I thought we had cracked it but I have to admit defeat for the time being. The main thing is I need to get some work done and need to get back to a guaranteed rock solid system for a while, and thern when I go to Lion again I need to start from a much cleaner base

Many thanks for the help and advice.

But you haven't actually mentioned any problem. You just said you are giving up on Lion.

Unfortunately, sometimes people like to start threads just complaining about (insert new/updated Apple product here) so they can collect lots of "me too" responses. Perhaps it is a game to see how many thread views and replies they can get. Such threads always have inflamatory titles like "Giving up on Lion" and never provide any details on any problems. This thread meets all of the above critieria.

often 'such threads' get responses which complain about people 'just complaining' and people not posting detailed reports of problems, and such responses usually include some patronising stuff about what the support community is and isn't for.

if you click on my name and then on tommy banana's stuff you can quite easily find a detailed threaad where I have posted my problems with Lion if you are interested. I did mark my OP as not being a question to indicate that I wasn't looking for people to help me trouble shoot but I was letting people know what had been happening to me.

I think there is a range of views as to what a user community forum is for and thankfully currently in the world that diversity is cool because AFAIK we are free to be ourselves and decide for ourselves within certain limits. you sar entitled to let me know what you think too. I personally find it useful to know when , for example , people are having problems with things like OS upgrades and when , for example, people have decided to go back to a previous OS.

I am a professional user and have used Macs for 25 years and NEVER before have I deinstalled a MAc OS upgrade.I personally find the user community very helpful by allowing me to be able to gauge where other users are with a piece of software because it helps me make informed decisions about what I am going to do and how - eg should I upgrade now or wait until this is more stable etc. How best can I uopgrade to minimse risk of disruption.

I have also found it useful on this thread that people have told me they have NVIDIA based Macs and external displays which havent had propblems with Lion.

And you did, I was following your thread with interest and it was one of the more detailed and seriously concerned post about fixing your isues with Lion here on the forums for a while. Linc was helping you out. I am sorry to hear that you couldn't find the resolution you were seeking and going back to Snow Leopard is a reasonable response, as is keeping Lion on a smaller partition or an external drive so you can keep testing it with any updates whilst using Snow as your main OS for the present. There are plenty of threads here which explain how to do these in detail.

Cheers and Good Luck
