Error (-50) appeared when downloading video

Hello! So I reciently tried to download a rented movie. It got about a quarter of the way through downloading when the error message occured "There was an error downloading your purchased music. An unknown error occurred (-50)." I found the help page http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1583 and followed the instructions in removing the file, but when I went to sign in and redownload it, I got the same error. Is there another solution to this issue?

Try this...

Launch iTunes on your Mac.

From the iTunes menu bar click iTunes > Preferences then select the Advanced tab.

Click: Reset warnings and Reset cache

Click OK

Restart your Mac, launch iTunes, try again.

This happens to me quite often and I found the following to work better than the solution to delete the download cache in finder:

In iTunes go to "Downloads" and right click the file reference (with the error msg). Click "Delete".

Then select from the iTunes main menu "store"->"check for available downloads".

The file will start to download again where it previously left off.

The error message still comes up again (and again, and again) and interfere with the download process, but eventually you get the whole file.

I don't think that's it but I'm on virgin media cable in the UK. Apple support have given up with my problem and I have been issued with a refund. They also said the issue would be escalated for further investigation. Exploring the net I found someone else who was given exactly the same message nearly a month ago. Looks like an Apple problem to me.

Facing the same issues as described I first looked into the power savings modes. Event after switching off evertyhing obvious like putting HD to sleep and going into standby, same problem remained. Than I took my chances and even switched off the power saving options for the screen and...it looks like the download succeeds in one go. Could be a coincidence only applicable for the current movie I am downloading but i felt like sharing it with all of you.

I've had this problem on, and off with the iTunes Store with various versions of OS X, including (error -50). It pretty much happens to me intermittently while downloading tv shows. For instance, the entire 4th season of "Damages" downloaded just fine, except for 1 episode, with a paltry 40MB left to go out of the 1.57gb total before crapping out with -50. This happened yesterday.

Each time it happens, the most ridiculously simple solution has worked for me. I either select the "Check for available downloads" option in the "Store" menu (which didn't work for me this time), or like today, I quit iTunes, and then immediately restarted it, and it downloaded the rest of the show without any problems on its own after starting up.

Weird.

But, you know, I hear sacrificing the odd toaster to the Technology Gods helps, too! 😉

One of the posted solutions here worked for me, so I want to reiterate it incase it helps someone else. You can go to your itunes folder in finder or through searching for it on your pc (probably in the music folder) and then navigate to the downloads folder. For me, the downloads folder was inside the itunes music folder. The downloads folder only seems to contain items in the process of downloading. Open it, and delete all the folders that have this error. Itunes will have to be closed in order to do this. Then reopen itunes, go to store, check for downloads and the downloads will start all over again and this time, for me, they made it.

People are right that -50 is a random error that seems to happen every now and then for unknown reasons. For me, it has always been connected to do many downloads at once, regardless of their size. Sometimes it's just ap updates that produce the error. It appears to me that the key to fixing it is erasing evidence of the error, hence some people have success with cleaning cache and so on. For me cleaning the cache wasn't enough. I needed to delete the files.

Hope this helps others.

FOR EVERYONE WITH -50 ERROR

First close your iTunes. Go to your iTunes folder within your computer, then click on the media, then select on your issues (movies, music, shows) within that folder find the content ( title ) which you are trying to download. Delete the folder to recycle bin, and trash it, completely. Then re-open iTunes. Now the issue should clear and iTunes should ask for your password to re-download it. I found this in a random article, though someone else had pointed it to me. Hope this help everyone....
