How do I delete music from my iPad

Go to music, swipe the songs you want to delete.

If you've synced it from your computer's iTunes then it might be easiest (and if you aren't on iOS 5 then it's the only way) to delete it via when connected to it - select the iPad on the left-hand side of iTunes and then on the Music tab on the right-hand side change what you want to sync to it.

If you delete it directly on the iPad, (on iOS 5+ you can delete individual tracks by swiping across them, or you can delete entire albums or artists via the Albums or Artists selection screen by pressing and holding what you want to delete) then they may get synced back to the iPad when you next connect to it to your computer.

So if you press and hold an album on the album selection screen in the Music app for a couple of seconds or so, you don't then get an 'x' in its top left corner (and similarly on the artist selection screen) ?

And if you de-select playlists, artists , albums etc on the Music tab when connected to your computer's iTunes doesn't remove that content from the iPad ? What happens when you de-select them on that tab, does nothing them happen when you apply/sync the chages, or are you not able to de-select them ?

Have you tried swiping across a song in a playlist to see if the red Delete button pops up?

Are you sure that the iPad is running iOS 5? Settings>General>About>Version will tell you for sure.

Go into iTunes on your computer if you can, and plug in your iPad.

You will see it in the left side under devices. Click on it there.

The summary tab will pull up on the right. Click to the music section.

Deselect sync music, then click apply in the bottom right hand corner, below revert.

Thanks so much for this tip! I had the exact same problem and could not find anything on the iTunes support page to help me! Tried the "swipe" on my iPhone 4S just now and it worked great! Now I can go home and do the same thing on my iPad2! Many many thanks!

I am having the same problem and I'm so frustrated!!! I don't have an iphone nor do I want one. My son has an ITouch IPod that he downloaded some explicit songs that show up on my Ipod on my IPad2 so I want to delete them but there is no way. Everyone keeps saying to connect to a different computer to connect to ITunes. WHY??? My iPad2 IS my computer. Why would Apple make it this way? THey should want people to use their IPad2 for everything. My iTunes was originally on a computer that has a virus that no one can get rid of. I've brought it in 5 times so I cannot hook it up to my iPad2. NO, the swiping does not show an X. I've tried in both Ipod and ITunes on my iPad2. I'm beginning to think getting this was a big mistake. Hopefully someone can understand why I'm frustrated and can help me before I write off Apple altogether and stick with Samsung which is way more logical than any Apple created program I've encountered. P.S. I work with computers as my ft job so I can usually figure things like this out.

What if I don't have iOS5? I checked into downloading that to my brand new iPad2 (WHY wouldn't they already have the new OS downloaded on it??) but I have to hook it up to another computer with iTunes already on it. That makes NO sense! THIS is my computer. My originally downloaded iTunes is on a computer with a nasty slow-me-down-wait-an-hour-to-open-the-web virus. I just want to get rid of this explicit music off my iTunes. Anyone??

If you do not sync with iTunes - how did the songs get on your iPad in the first place? By using automatic downloads I assume?

You may want to either disable automatic downloads on your iPad so that your son's explicit lyrics songs do not get downloaded to your iPad. If you are not using a computer to sync with - that is the only way that the music can be downloaded to your device. Go to Settings>Store>Automatic Downloads>Music>Off.

If the music was downloaded to the device and you do not have iOS 5 on the iPad - you cannot delete the music any other way other than to sync with iTunes again.

The iPad can now be a PC free device as long as you have iOS 5 running on it. Apple - or any Apple authorized reseller is not about to pull all brand new iPads off of their shelves just because they are not preloaded with iOS 5.

You can update the device on a computer and then you never have to worry about using the iPad with a computer again - if that is what you choose to do.

An Apple store can probably update your device for you if you do not want to use your old PC.

The first time I put ITunes on my IPad2 was the week of Christmas when I was visiting relatives. I was discouraged that there was not any type of manual with it but I figured out to hook it up to my IPod. It synced at the time and I had the same songs from my IPod appear on my ITunes...until the next time I opened it when I was back at home. None of my previous songs appeared; only ones I had purchased since Christmas. I had also downloaded the latest version of ITunes.

Thank you for the valuable tip on disabling automatic downloads. I didn't realize there was such a thing...my son just got his IPod 2 weeks ago. I will definitely do that.

I was not suggesting Apple or any other Apple authorized reseller pull all brand new iPads off of their shelves. I did not buy one from a shelf; I ordered it. My experience is that the latest operating system is already on the computer related to the maker. Since I purchased one (actually I purchased 2) the week before Christmas, I was surprised to find it did not have the latest OS. How was I to know that I needed it to make my iPad2 a PC free device and that I would have to figure out a way to get it onto it??? I've never used Apple products, but read reviews and asked my colleagues about it. The majority of my IT friends do not prefer Apple, but other people spoke highly of it. This is all new to me so I appreciate your input in my learning experience.

Thank you for suggesting that an Apple store can update my device for me. I didn't know that and that is a super solution!! That is much easier than me dealing with my virus-ridden old PC.

Okay, I can't promise this will work with regular music syncing, but if you're using iTunes Match this will wipe all your locally-downloaded files. Someone withOUT itTunes Match should try it and post results.

Settings -> General -> Usage -> Music

Then swipe across "All Music"
