iTunes is crashing on my iPad when I search. I get the list of options and if I select one, the app closes.

on my iPad, iTunes is "crashing". Whenever I search and then select one of the options, iTunes closes. I've used iTunues numerous times in the past without problem. All of a sudden, it crashes when I search.

iPad, iOS 5.0.1

I cleared Safari history, but iTunes still closes when I search for anything. I've also closed all open apps, reset the iPad, and restarted, similar to others, but iTunes still closes upon searching. I see that the crashes are getting recorded in the diagnostics (in settings). The iPad has over 6 GB of free space. (64 GB capacity). I'm surprised this isn't a more common complaint!

Some users have reported one of the following worked for them, may be you want to try one at a time to see which one works for you.

  • SETTINGS / SAFARI / Clear History and Clear Cookies and Data
  • SETTINGS / SAFARI / Javascript - OFF
  • SETTINGS / SAFARI / ADVANCED / WEBSITE DATA / Remove All website DATA
  • SETTINGS / GENERAL / KEYBOARD / AUTO-CORRECTION - OFF

If all that fails, you may have to wipe everything from your ipad and setup as new:

  1. Put your iPad in DFU mode
  2. SETUP in iTunes as new. DONOT repeat DONOT Restore from your Backup as your Backup may return your problem.
  3. Reinstall your APPS directly from your iPAD (APP STORE / PURCHASED / NOT ON THIS IPAD tab / install them one by one.

thanks wiclee, tried it all. even with the latest iOS, plenty of available room, and rebooting after doing your suggestions, this app still crashes when i do a search.

in fact, it crashes a lot, when doing other things too. if i could i would deleted the stupid app. which makes having to wipe out everything to get this app to work crazy making. if was any non-apple app, you would delete the darn thing and reinstall, and not have to wipe out the entire ipad for one app.

this should be an embarassment to apple. i only use the app to find music for PURCHASING. so out of frustration, i don't and they lose money. not good business.

and then a few days before christmas, i thought i would look for new christmas tunes. but wait, there's no longer a Holiday genre option on the iPad iTunes app. in fact, there was nothing in there, other than a small sale they were having, that had to do anything with Holiday music. ***. again, nothing purchased.

i guess i should be happy. because this app doesn't work, i've saved myself a lot of money. shame on apple. you'd think this would be the benchmark app for the company. but from it's performance, clearly this is not a priority.

Sungecko, you are not alone. I've had the same problem with iTunes since updating to 5. I can temporarily clear it by closing all apps and rebooting, but I have to use a different search. If iTunes or even AppStore is open, I will get crashes with searches. I also have an iPad 1 on current version..,and the exact problem you have. It's obviously a bug. I too have saved money...but find it very frustrating. I have AppleCare, but don't want to spend an hour on the phone only to have them deny its a issue.

I have iPad 1, have updated with newest downloads. For a while now, probably since ios5, and i have had so many issues. I think Apple doesnt test things with the iPad 1 just the iPad2. When i search itunes it closes constantly. When i use Safari it closes too. Sometimes itunes on pc freezes and i need to restart pc. I have reset iPad twice and problems continue. Cant really get help from Apple as it so hard to navigate support. When they do reply its like an automated reply, with simple fixes i tried before contacting them.

Clearly Apple has a problem with Ios5 and the iPad1. They dont seem to be listening, or caring anymore.

Why would the Settings in Safari have an affect on iTunes? This is the one thing that confuses me. I mean I can understand the keyboard, because it seems like the issue is when you go to search. I've also noticed that iTunes seems to be really laggy on the iPad 1. I there a possibility that the current OS is stretching the limits of the first generation unit?

I have same issue and Apple dont want to help. I beleive they try the new operating systems on iPad2 and iPad 1 has issues supporting ios5. Last night everytime I searched for something in Itunes on my iPad it closed, its SO annoying. I think we all need to email Apple until they resolve because they are obviously not getting the hint!

I love my iPad, but it is getting so 😠annoying. Are they trying to get us all to buy the iPad2? I think its a ploy to get us so annoyed that we stray from the original!
