What is backupd-helper ?

I get a pop up that says the application backupd-helper canceled logout. Where does this come from and what does it mean? I don't have much software other than Lion and MS Office, but can't seem to find what is generating this and why.

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.7.2)

You stated; "I have TM on an external drive that I infrequently use."

What do you mean. Is it the disk or TM that you use infregently?

If you are using the external disk for your data, I would suggest that the best method to do that is to partition the disk. Then have TM use one partition and put your data in the other.

It is your call about backup and how you do them. Personally I think my data is important so I actually backup up two different way to two different disk drives.

What I was saying was that the error message at the start of this thread indicate that something is wrong with the way you have TM configured. I was not trying to suggest you give up on TM. What I was trying to suggest was you fix it so that the error goes away and then test it to be sure it working correctly.

Launch the Console application by entering the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select "system.log" from the file list. Enter "backupd" (without the quotes) in the filtering text box. Post the messages from the last backup, beginning with "Starting standard backup." Post the log text, please, not a screenshot. Edit out excessive repeats, if any. Some personal information, such as the names of your files, may be included -- edit that out, too, but don’t remove the context.
