I was just given a wifi iPad for Christmas, and it's awesome. But I'd use it 10x more if I could use 3G. It's engraved with my name. Is it possible to exchange this for a wifi + 3G model, or does the engraving make this impossible?

Sell it. There's an excellent market for barely used iPads.
As rbylawski suggests, sell it. You should get a good price for an almost new iPad even with thE engraving.
Thanks, everyone. I think I'll just keep this one and not worry about the non-3G thing; the iPad is an awesome e-reader, and that's what I was looking to use it as mostly anyway. And there's lots of wi-fi in the world. Then next time I'll either hint with more detail or buy my own. 🙂
For my case, the return was actually an exchange for a new new iPad unit as my current new ipad (engraved) was heating over 50 celcius in minutes over light usage.
I've sent it back today and to my surprise (just today), the new unit which will be shipped to me will also have the same engraved text on the aluminium back, they've also attached a new invoice for the iPad which will be delivered to my doors. I'm thinking this is possible.
I don't know if you have an iPhone or not, but if you do, it makes a great hotspot that you can connect your iPad to. I have the iPad 3 4G model, but I don't have a sim card. It connects to my iPhone 3GS great and can use the data through the iPhone, when required.
