Remote and Universal Dock only controls volume?

I rencently got the latest iPod classic and Apple Universal Dock. Using both, the remote can only control the volume of the played track, but doesn't let me switch between songs or anything else. I know it's functionality is limited but not this limited. I have the latest software update for my iPod. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
