cut and paste without over-writing

i've asked this a number of times as I drop in and out of using numbers during my move to mac and basically want to apologize for asking this again. however -

i am cutting (CTRL + X) sets of rows by simply multiple selecting the rows and running the cut command line option. i /then/ want to paste this into the same numbers spreadsheet without having to create a ton of empty rows and then deleting the ones that were not used and the way I am /trying/ to do this is by selecting an empty row clicking in the first column (just once) and then running CTRL + V.

however, this is "eating up" data that is below this row and i want the pasted data to insert itself so that it /creates/ rows and doesn/t cannibalize the rows below which have mission critical data in them.

can anyone clear up what I am not doing or doing wrong here? is there a setting that will stop this behaviour which seems very dangerous to me if not caught?

TIA.

Question asked and answered several times.

Asking several time the same question will not change the application's behavior.

Not only it was answered several times but it's explained in Numbers User Guide.

You are not using XL so there is no reason to guess that the app will behase like the other.

If you don't want to replace existing values, you must create the block of blank cells to paste in.

Jon,

You haven't said if your selection of rows in the source table is contiguous. I'll assume that it is.

Method 1.

After cutting the rows that you wish to move, Paste them to a blank area of the canvas. Then select the new table and drag it into the receiving table. Watch as you move the cursor into the receiving table how the horizontal borders split as you hover over them. If you let go the mouse button, the past will occur at the split border without overwrite.

Method 2.

Select the rows to be moved. Drag them to the location where you want to split the table to receive them. Let go.

Regards,

Jerry

It depends.

If the blank row is at the bottom of the table, the other ones will be created automatically.

If the blank row is between two filled rows (what I assumed given your question about 'overWriting') yes, you must create the new blank rows.

At least it's what I thought when I posted.

Since, I looked back in Numbers User Guide and found an info which I missed :

Thank you Jerrold.

I obviously have a lot to learn here and some of it I am finding not so easy.

That said, my methodology was to multiple select the row numbers on the left hand side, CTRL + X and then Yvan has showed me that I can pull down from Insert and do a "Copied Rows" which is really a great help for me.

My workaround on this was very inefficient so a big THANKS for the help.

Regards.

I'm glad to get it because it would be easy to give it a shortcut.

This way, it will be easier than the paste elsewhere + drag and drop scheme.

Same comment for the insert columns item.
