Ibook G4 update from 10.4.11 to enable me to use ipad2...

Just got an ipad 2 for xmas (woohoo!) - only problem is my ibook g4 (currently running 10.4.1) and version of itunes (9.2.1) i have wont recognise it and tells me i require an upgrade... the G4 is currently running 10.4.11 and wont recognise any software updates including Itunes 10.5 and above, or safari 10.5 and above...given my dad's PC (which has the latest itunes) will recognise my ipad2, im surprised and frustrated that my ibook won't....looking at similar forum questions, it looks like i might need to purchase the update..?? is that right? (if so, why have i not had to pay for any previous upgrades and why do PC users get the necessary software updates free..?)

i'm confused and stuck and want to get on with enjoying my ipad!! HELP! please?

iPadf2 is not supported on Tiger (10.4); the iPad cannot be synced with a Mac with a PPC such as your iBook G4. Now that iOS5 is available you no longer need a computer in any event to get updates and download apps from the App Store.

You need to buy Mac OS X 10.5 on DVD. 10.4.11 is free from any earlier 10.4 version.

Thank you for your helpful reply - this has been driving me nuts! i notice 10.6 is now available for purchase but im guessing i can't skip 10.5? so i basically need to fork out about £40 then for 10.5 which i cant avoid if i want to sync my ipad2 to my g4...?

Please keep in mind that the earliest iBook G4s are not compatible with Mac OS X 10.5. If it's an 800 MHz iBook G4, then it doesn't meet the specifications for Mac OS X 10.5.

If it is an iBook that is compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 and you buy the DVD and install it, then you are good to go with iTunes 10.5.2:

The system requirements for the iPad 2 do not say that the iPad requires an Intel processor to work with a Mac (which is very good news for iBook users):

You ideally need the retail install DVD version of 10.5 - it's a black disc with a big black X across the center - there are various other versions of the 10.5 disc around usually gray colored; avoid as these are for specific Macs like e.g the early Mini and will not install on an iBook. Once installed you can upgrade to 10.5.8, which is as far as the iBook will upgrade.

The 800MHz iBook G4s aren't actually incompatible with Leopard. Apple put the 867MHz requirement into the installer for performance reasons.

All right.

I should have said that the 800 MHz iBook G4s do not meet the system requirements for Mac OS X 10.5.
