If you pay for a book from the iBookstore, it says on the purchase page that you must have an iOS device to read it, and that is indeed the case. Except for a very few publishes which do not use DRM, such books cannot be read on an OS X Mac or on a PC.
From the iBookstore, perhaps, but from iTunes it does not. Fortunately the book I downloaded...SINCE my iPad was stolen, was free. Apple refused to help me get my serial number and since then have tried to read my iBooks from my PC and can't.
Makes you wonder why anyone would by an Apple product. I know I never will again, and my mother is giving hers away after less than 1 year. She is extremely disatisfied with Apple service and support.

PS If your book was free, it may not have any DRM, in which case you may be able to read it with an app like Calibre.
i think i have the answer for this👿
you have books stored in itunes (if u sync ur device) or download from the itunes store to ur itunes library.
now copy the book to the desktop and change it's extension from .epub to .zip
open it you will find .html files ( ℹ html is a webpage format)
open the html files. they will open in ur default browser
read them from the browser.
how i know this:
Tried it my self🙂
discovered it myself😎

This will not work for any paid-for book with DRM, which is what most people want to read. If the book is free or paid-for without DRM, then you should be able to simply use an app like Calibre and not mess with the file.
Thanks, but this free book has DRM as well. confirmed with both Sony Reader and per your suggestion calibre. I'm sorry, but with as many "cute" things that Apple has, they simply are too anal.when I get back to the US I will get my Macbook Air fixed (fan and hinges) and either sell it cheap or donate it. Then I'll buy a real laptop and just stay away from Apple and all their products.

I am curious about that -- could you provide the author/title? I've not seen any free books with DRM (aside from a couple examples provided by Apple), as it has no point.
Agreed but it does. The Title is Date with the Devil by Mallory Rush. I had to go to my Macbook Air to check as everything "Apple" was removed from my PC.
To comment further on a previous question, ...the download doesn't just automatically happen. It does give, at least from the MBA, a description and other info. Also, I may have missed it by I don't see anything that says it is DRM.
I have heard, however, that iBookstore is very "dedicated" to doing all their books with DRM.

It never says "DRM". Instead is says that an iOS device is required.
Whether DRM is used in the iBookstore is totally determined by the person publishing the book, not by Apple.
It's true that for some reason the publisher has made that free book you mention a "protected book".
Yes. it does say that. By the way, I was able to duplicate the way in which downloading a book never tells you anything about the book nor its requirements. The process is the same as I had mentioned several emails back except....
With the books listed to the right... click on free. As your cursor passes over each book there appears a "free" button (or downloaded if already in iTunes). clicking on the button will NOT bring up any information on the book. The download immediately begins unless your password is required.
...and about the iOS requirement. I'm sorry, but most people are finding out that Apple only makes these available to iPhone and iPad. The complaint of everyone is that they cannot read them on their PC or Mac.

Yes, if you do not click on the title of a book in the top charts or similar lists, you will not see any info, including the statement by Apple that you must have an iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch to read the book. And you are certainly correct, everyone has been complaining about this limitation of the iBookstore since it was first established over 2 years ago, and nobody can figure out why Apple has failed in all this time to release a version of iBooks for OS X, or even promised to do so.
Yep... if you have a macincloud account and pay $1 an hour.
From now on, I will NOT purchase ibooks!! I need to be able to read from my PC too. Nook and Kindle have PC aps to read their books.
