Mac not detecting usb flash drive

Finder > Preferences > General > Show these items on the desktop > check "External disks."

Is your Apple menu -> System Preferences -> CDs and DVDs set to open in Finder every device listed?

If not, it may not show up on the Desktop.

Does your Finder menu -> Preferences -> General Show these items on desktop have anything unchecked?

If it does, then some items may not appear on the desktop.

Does your Finder menu -> Preferences -> Sidebar -> Devices have anything unchecked? If it does, then not all removable devices will show.

Are you sure you plugged in the device into a high speed USB bus? Go to Apple menu -> About This Mac -> More info, and inspect the USB bus to see if the device is there.

Sometimes some USB ports fail to give enough power for devices if you recently closed the lid or woke up from energy saver. Reboot the computer to make sure that's not the case.

I have had this problem with several usb flash drives. I had 100 custom printed 8gb usb flash drives made for our company and about 7 or 8 of them wern't recognized when I plugged them in. I just removed them and set them aside and tried them later and they all worked.

Try plugging it to the USB port on your USB keyboard.

try to format the usb stick on windows with NTFS. This solved the problem in my case.

Yes my HP USB stick doesnt get recognised and everything not Apple as well ,....a real drama to work with my iMac..

I have had this problem where it does not show up on desktop but disk utility recognized it. I simply erased it and did not reformat it and it showed up ready to go.

Prettyglass, this is a user to user forum, meaning your comments are just venting to other users like yourself, and not Apple. Your issues are going to be much more getting a Samsung than getting an Apple. For one thing, there are no viruses affecting the Mac community. Trojan horses not withstanding and people who put their machines at risk knowingly by using peer2peer software, Apple has a far more secure system than anyone else. If you want to give Apple feedback without expecting a return reply go to http://www.apple.com/feedback/ if you feel you have isolated a bug, post it to http://bugreporter.apple.com/ after getting a free online developer account on http://developer.apple.com/ . Otherwise, please stick to the subject matter, and try to either help find a solution, or look for a solution. Ideally, since b-sahan has found a solution, you would want to ask them how they went about it, or read the thread more carefully. If their solution does not help, it is better to start a new thread asking for help either in the MacBook Pro forum, or the operating system forum where the issue presented itself. You'll get a much wider audience, and likely a solution that addresses your problem.

Firstly, sometimes mac would have detected the drive but it might not be listed in the finder's device list. To solve that Go to Finder menu -> Preferences -> Sidebar -> Devices and ensure to check "External Disks" in devices section.

If that doesn't help, here's the solution.

I found that the Hp pendrives comes with Write-Protection enabled by default for added security purposes in virus-prone environments

So if you have not formatted the disk atleast once in mac/windows and inserting a brand new product then this issue comes up.

If you have a windows machine go ahead and format pen drive once there and pop it back into mac to make it up and running.

However, if you dont own a windows machine and wanted to make it work in Mac the following steps will help you

1. Go to Disk Utility

2. Find USB in medias (HP v210w in this case)

3. Go to Erase Tab

4. Pick "MS-Dos Fat" file system and Erase the disk.

Thats all the disk is now detected and mounted in mac as well..

Firstly you have to note that this is forum and forums are ultimately meant to resolve the issues that users struggle with not to discuss the conflicts the manufactures have.

On other hand statement "Yes my HP USB stick doesnt get recognised and everything not Apple as well ,....a real drama to work with my iMac" clearly shows up that your knowledge on mac is very minimal. Basically Fat32 file system is the major cross-platform supportive systems and mac does possess estensive support to that.

On patents. its not drama. Because if a dad wanted his son to stay with him we can't say it a drama because technically dad has essential rights. Similarly when apple created something it should try to own it with patents. (I dont guess you could give up something which you created out for free).

On your preference to buy a samsung laptop. I thing samsung doesn't own a highly-secured operating system as apple does. I you're gonna get windows then honestly you can go for other great innovative manufactures (HP) who comes up with their own designs,products and architectures rather than a simple copy-cat, patent-disloyal samsung products.
