Dear Terence. I have Lion 10.7.4 0n my mac and of course all the apps have been reinstalled. However when I try to open iphoto's I get a message telling me that before I can open it I need to ket a sortware update. When I update the software it tells me that there is no update. I go to my purchases at the apps store and it tells me that I cannot reinstall because it's already on my computer. I try to drag the icon to the trash bin and that doesn't work either. Can you advise of a way out of this impasse please

Hi Terence,

Wow--you seem to be the go to guy for Mac/iPhoto issues!

On behalf of all of us that you've helped (or are about to help), thank you for your time and help.

Computer hardware and software seems to be the only business that rely on their more knowledgeable customers to solve other customer problems, but I digress...

My issue is that I'm trying to set up this iCloud thingy with my new iMac (and new MacBook Pro), and iPhoto will not open on the iMac.

I haven't tried on the MacBook yet--I'm assuming that if I can get everything set up right with iCloud on the office computer that the laptop will sync as well.

When I attempt to open iPhoto, I get a box that says "To open your library with this version of iPhoto, it first needs to be prepared. To prepare the library, use the iPhoto Library Upgrader from Apple."

Then there's two boxes--one says "Learn More," and the other one says "Quit."

"Learn More" takes you to and Apple web page where you can download the iPhoto Library Upgrader.

So I went and got the upgrader, installed it, rebooted, clicked on iPhoto, and the same message comes up--I've done this three times and I can't access iPhoto or any of my images in there.

I don't use iPhoto for much except my iPhone images and posting images online, but for these things you have to use iPhoto, and it would be nice to get these images off my phone and finish getting iCloud set up, since I'd like to be able to sync images and info to the new computers and iPhone.

Here are the details:

I've just transferred all my data (using the Apple migration assistant) from my old G4 dual processor machine, including my iPhoto library, to a new 27' iMac.

OS 10.7.4

3.1 Intel Core i5

16 GB RAM

iPhoto version 9.3

All of my Apple software is up to date, and the OS was already installed when I bought the computer(s).

I've only been using the iMac for a few days (MacBook for a few weeks), but I've had no other issues.

Again, thank you for your time Terence.

Take care,

Brian

a couple of things

Migration assistance does not handle the iPhoto library well sometimes - the best way is to drag the bad iphoto library from the pictures folder on the new system to the desktop, connect the two systems together (network, firewire target mode, etc) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old system to the pictures folder of the new system and launch iPhoto on the new system - it will open and convert the iPhoto library as necessary and you will be fine - once you test the iPhoto library you can delete the one on the desktop

What version of iPhoto do you actually have? Note that an ongoing current issue is software update saying there are no updates where the actually are hence the actual version number is critical

Hi Larry,

Thank you for the heads-up--I knew that there would be some glitch in transferring data--it just seemed too easy.

I figured that between the different operating systems and the different processors that something would go bad--I was worried it was gonna be iTunes, since I have 5000+ songs, books, etc., (many purchased online) that would be a great deal of grief, but so far so good.

When I bring up the info on iPhoto on my new computer (iMac), it says it's version 9.3, created 4/23/12, modified 6/27/12.

Again, thank you Larry--I'll fire up the G4 tomorrow and give it a try.

Take care,

Brian

Hi Larry and Terence,

I wanted to let you know that I figured out the issue with iPhoto and opening my old iPhoto library.

I said previously:

"When I attempt to open iPhoto, I get a box that says "To open your library with this version of iPhoto, it first needs to be prepared. To prepare the library, use the iPhoto Library Upgrader from Apple."

Then there's two boxes--one says "Learn More," and the other one says "Quit."

"Learn More" takes you to and Apple web page where you can download the iPhoto Library Upgrader."

So I went and got the upgrader, installed it, rebooted, clicked on iPhoto, and the same message comes up--I've done this three times and I can't access iPhoto or any of my images in there."

Many small helper apps like iPhoto Library Upgrader will work automatically in the background--you never see anything happen, no app icon, etc.

Well, in this case when I downloaded and installed iPhoto Library Upgrader, it left it in my Utilities folder--all I had to do was double-click on it and follow the instructions.

I feel like a tool now, going through all of this while it was just sitting in the Utilities.

I felt I should let everyone know how I resolved this, and again thank Larry for his input.

Take care,

Brian

Hi, Terence,

My iphoto won't open either. We have "MacOS version 10.6.7" per the Mac OS X Install Dvd. We got the iMac in July 2011. I don't know where to find any other information about versions, etc.

When I manually click on "iphoto," the word appears in the upper left hand corner but other than that the page looks just like "Safari," and I cannot click on any of the options in the tabs. When I connected my camera, there was no prompt to import the photos and they did not automatically import. I finally disconnected my camera.

I have tried quitting iphoto and then holding down command and option while clicking iphoto with selecting the last 2 options of the box that appears as to "rebuilding and repairing library." A brief message comes up and then nothing happens.

Help!

My IPhoto isn't opening. The wheel keeps spinning. I am on Mac OSX - IPhoto "11 version 9.1

This has never happened before. I restarted the computer and the same thing happens. I tried to drag one picture in to Iphoto and it has not opened since. I don't get the menu down the side left side column to see events, etc.

What should/can I do?

iPhoto will not open
