MacBook Pro 17 inch burning hot?

I just got a MacBook Pro 17 inch and when I am on it for 10 minuets, it starts to become burning hot on the bottom and at the top of the keyboard. I don't have it on my lap, I always have it on a hard surface. Sometimes I put tape rolls under the sides to lift it up. When it starts to heat up, the computer starts to get a lot slower. The only fan I feel is where the top and the bottom connect. Is this heat normal??

If your MacBook gets too hot, it will suddenly shut down without any warning.

To get a convection current going, you need about 3/4 inch (20mm) free air space.

The fans blow hot air out the back, between the base and the screen. If you Mac is open a lot more than 90 degrees, it will start to impinge the air flow.

The Apple Hardware Test will tell you if all fans are working.

Mac computer have heat sensors in them that monitor the heat and control fan speed. If a mac gets too hot it is suppose to shut down to protect it, If you want to know the temperature, you can go to google type in mac heat temperature widgets and download one. Under heavy use 85 degress is not abnormal. Also under heavy use your nac can seem to slow down, could need more ram.

My MBP is always hot. I thought it was Flash. How do you do the apple hardware test.

You know Grant, I am always told that you do not have to turn the computer off and use the disc to check and repair permissions. This is something on the side but i know you will know the answer. the only way I can get my permissions repaired is if I use the Disc, turn the computer off, turn iot back on holding down (I think it is D) and I get the menu to pick disk Utility. I then go through that and hit check permissions and then repair. It will clear them all out, if I have a lot i have to do it about twice, but I get people telling me all the time you can just leave your computer on and opne Disk Utility right from the dock and repair them that way. I do that and none get repaired. I do it again and none show they are repaired. I do it that way, restart the computer and the same permissions are still present. the ONLY way I can get y permissions fixed is if I use the Disk (the OS Disk, Ithink it is), start with the computer off, start up the computer holding down I think the d key which brings me to the menu and i go from there. why do people tell me I do not need to start with the computer off and I do not need to use the Disk? they say all I have to do is click Disk Utility and do the repair permissions from there but that does not do one thing for me. In the documents that describe

Apple Hardware Test:

On newer Macs the Apple Hardware Test is installed on the Hard Drive at the factory. If you have replaced the Hard drive, or done a major upgrade, that image was probably lost.

'The "standard" way is to use the original-issue DVD that says on the face, something like: "to run Apple Hardware test, insert this disc and hold down the D key as you start up"
