It turns out that you can reinstall GarageBand a number of ways. It depends on how you got GarageBand in the first place. If you currently have GarageBand installed, you may need to uninstall it before proceeding.

If you purchased iLife '11 on DVD, you can install GarageBand on it's own from the install DVD.

If GarageBand '11 was included on your computer and you purchased your computer before Lion was released, you can reinstall GarageBand from the Install DVDs that came with your computer.

If GarageBand '11 was included on your computer and your computer shipped with Lion, you can redownload GarageBand from the Mac App Store.

If you purchased GarageBand from the Mac App Store, you can click on the Purchases Tab from within the store, and download it again from there.

If these solutions do not apply to you, you can purchase GarageBand from the Mac App Store in OS X 10.6.6 or later, or you can purchase the install DVD for iLife '11 from the Apple Online Store (http://store.apple.com/au/product/MC623Z/A/iLife-11).

Hope this helps provide you with some guidance.

I think garageband disappeared from my brother's MacBook Air but he may have accidentally uninstalled it. Its from late 2012 running Mountain Lion. I went to the Mac App Store and it says its $15. None of the backups in time machine contain garageband since they are from the past couple days. I am also going to be getting my own 13" standard MacBook Pro. When I get that, could I do a data transfer if I can't get Garageband back? I'm also guessing that his would lose all his data from that too.

If your brother's MBA came with Mt. Lion (or Lion) and GarageBand preinstalled, then GarageBand should be in the "Purchased" section (or the "Accept" portion of the "Purchased" tab of the App Store. Don't go to the first tab, where you buy applications, look in the "Purchased" tab. And your brother needs to be signed into the App Store with the Apple ID he used, when he first set up his Mac.
