The reinstalling ofthe Garagenband content sorts it. It also happened to me when using the migration assistant from my previous Mac to my current one - so watch out for that too folks

Im having a similar issue.

Logic 9.1.8  OS 10.8.4

I suspect the problem has something to do with the fact that I recently got a new iMac and used Migration Assistant to move everything over.

I have tried all of the below and still I am getting missing .exs files:

I have re-downloaded the additional content (even though it says I already have it) - 6 hours

I have re-indexed spotlight. - 2 hours

I have Repaired disk permissions - 1 hour

I checked th folder and the instruments dont seem to be there

I have a suspicion that the instruments I am missing are something to do with the additional content that gets downloaded when you use garageband instruments on iPad then import to Logic. 

It seems to be these .exs files that are missing from the folder but how do I download these seperately?  I really dont want to have to re-download everything again.

Its a bit of a joke that Apple can no longer get thier OWN SOFTWARE to work with thier OWN OS.

Have you made sure that you definitely installed the aditional Garageband content into Logic - this worked for me (and I came into this problem via a Migration Assistant route too)

But yes you are right - this is woefully ****. Get a grip Apple!

Instead of using the Logic Pro menu item to download and install the essential and additional content.. use these external links instead...

For various but not fully understood reasons.. some people have network related problems when trying to download/install the extra content via the menu options.. Using the external links usually fixes it.

Note: Make sure you have quit Logic Pro when you install the extra content you download.

As has been stated many times before... Migration Assistant is not recommended to move over Logic Pro to a new Mac. It is recommended that you install Logic Pro and it's content from scratch on a new Mac.. and not use MA to do so... because such issues afterwards, as you have reported, as very common.

just tried to install garageband content on its own just in case this was the issue but no change, same problem. 

These are projects that I started on iPad gargeband then moved across to Logic.

I remember having to download extra additional content when I moved the projects first time around.  I susupect that these instruments may be iPad garageband instruments but I haven't been prompted to download anything else, just says they are missing.

Even if they are legacy instruments they should still be available.

ok I found the fix for my issue

As the projects where missing the garageband iOS content I went back and re-opening the original .band file and was then prompted with a compatiblity upadter which proceeded to downlod the additional garageband iOS content.

Seems to only work if you re-open the garageband project though the exact same project in logic (which had worked previously)  did not give me this option.

hope that helps anyone else out there that may have the same issue and save you 8 hours of your life.

Hi all, I was having the same problem having bought a new Mac Book Pro Retina to replace an old aging white Macbook. I used the migration tool to move across logic and mainstage and ended up with the same problem everyone else had with huge banks of missing sounds. Through a mixture of playing, visit to the Apple store and reading above I managed to fix the problem.

1. An EXS file which logic and mainstage use is a small file which points to the actual much larger AIF samples.

2. As described above the missing files are not logic/mainstage samples they are garageband and this seems to boil down to the fact the new garageband has a lot less sounds than the old versions. You can see what sounds you have here:

     library/application support/garageband/instrument library/sampler/sampler files

The classic sample that everyone seems to be missing is Steinway Grand Piano. You will see you are missing.

3. The accompanying exs files are

library/application support/garageband/instrument library/sampler/sampler instruments

4. To import the old sounds I moved the sampler files and sampler instruments file on my old macbook to the public directory then copied them into the correct directory on my new macbook.

5. Hey presto all working again.

This worked thanks, just upgraded to a new MacBook Pro Retina with Mavericks, and although using Logic Express, was in the same boat after installing, as like you said, the new Garageband has limited instruments.

Sorry to hijack this thread, but I have a related question. I've posted this in the past, but never got a response.

I own all the Jam Packs. I've used them with GarageBand, then later Logic Express 8. These packs all need Rosetta to run the "intaller". I am still using Snow Leopard, so that isn't a problem. BUT, Mavericks no longer supports Rosetta. What I worry about is, if I do a clean install of Mavericks, how do I get back my jam pack sounds/loops? Can I just copy them over manually? How does that work?

Another question I have has to do with the new version; Logic Pro X, which I understand includes all the jam pack sounds. If I were to update to Mavericks (and keep the jam pack data), but then purchase Logic Pro X and install all the sounds files, would I end up with duplicates? Or would it sort it self out?

I would say, ideally, decide if you want to upgrade to Mavericks and Logic X. If you know for sure you will, that takes care of the issue, because as you said, ALL Jam Packs are included with X.

I have seen duplicate loops in my previous install of Logic Express 9, and all the doubles makes it tougher finding something useful, but there are ways of clearing that up.

If you're using LE 8 and have the processing power/memory to run X, along with the funds, still keep in mind X can take between 40-80GB of space, including all Jam Packs, Virtual Instruments, and effects.

As far as copying loops manually should you decide not to upgrade to X, I believe the answer is yes, but you have to know where to transfer them from (assuming you have Time Machine backups, or at the very least move loops to a backup location first) so you can drag them into Mavericks later.

Just to clarify ...

When you install LPX and then download and install all it's additional content (which includes the Jam packs) from within LPX itself... using the "Download Additional Content" function...  you will not end up with any duplicates as the Additional Content installer updates/moves all existing content to the correct locations itself... (when/if needed) and does not affect any earlier versions of LP in the process.

That's good to know. How do you like LPX - is it worlds better than LP9? Is it worth buying a new Mac Mini say in order to run it? As of now, too limited on HD space that's part of the mainboard now (saudered), which is why I've stayed with LE9. What would you say, from a production standpoint, makes LPX better, especially in terms of project efficiency?

My personal opinion is that while LPX has some nice new features and touches.... I still find myself using LP9 more often than not when working on critical projects.. as it suits my own workflow better than LPX...  and I do find LP9 to be more stable.... which instills more trust during time critical work.

Note: My stable setup is actually Logic Pro 9.1.5 and SL 10.6.8.... as I have found that combination to be the one that provides the most stability on my systems here. Later versions of LP9 in combination with later versions of OS X seem to reduce stability for me a little.. though I will say, not to the same degree others have reported in the past.

To quote an old adage... "If it ain't broken... don't fix it" so if your current systems works fine for you.. unless you have a really good reason and benefit to upgrade... don't... or at the very least.. keep your current setup intact and use an alternative system disk to boot from if you want to try out later OSX and LP versions together....
