After updating to iOS 5.0.1, the option "restore from backup" is not available.

After updating to iOS 5.0.1, the option "restore from backup" is not available. I see the old backups but itunes does not allow me to restore from those backups. Any Help?

I upgraded my iPhone 4 from iOs 4.3.3 to iOs 5.0.1.

OK, I'll give you "hardcore method" for restoring your iPhone 😉.

  • Connect the iPhone to your computer and launch iTunes
  • Turn the iPhone off (hold down the power button at the top of the iPhone)
  • Hold down the sleep/power button and home button together for exactly 10 seconds, then release the power button
  • Continue to hold down the Home button until a message appears in iTunes telling you an iPhone in recover mode has been detected
  • When you are in DFU mode your iPhone screen will be completely black

You should be able to restore from there.

Oh thank god I found this thread, I'm having the same exact problem.

I updated to 5.0.1 today and can't restore from a backup either. I've restored at least four times, in DFU mode and not, restarted my macbook, reinstalled iTunes, and nothing has worked. My backups are still there, but the "restore from backup" option isn't there.

I just went to restore again, and sure enough, the restore button is greyed out just like you described.

What the ****'s going on here?!

Try this

First, do the following:

Quit iTunes. Open terminal & type the following command or copy & paste:

defaults write com.apple.iTunes DeviceBackupsDisabled -bool false
defaults write com.apple.iTunes AutomaticDeviceBackupsDisabled -bool false

Press enter.

Once done, launch Disk Utility(from your Utility's Folder) , select your hard drive & then select "Repair Permissions". Once complete, launch iTunes, manually create a backup & see if that backup is now listed under Preferences>Devices.

You want to run permissions repair until the last line state: "Permissions Repair Complete", this can take 10~15 minutes or so. So, go back & run it until complete.

If this doesn't fix things(and, unfortunately it's starting to look like it won't), then only other thing left is to completely uninstall iTunes & then re-install. iTunes must be uninstalled in a certain order, so follow the directions here exactly. But, run permissions repair first.
